Default How do you sell beats/music

Okay I was just wondering how do you charge, How do you know it's the right price for the beat to charge? and how do you know when to bring the price up?

Is it when you become more popular or when your beats sound better. Basically how do you get to Pharells stage without becoming famous how do you know your beats are worth the price?

How much do/would you start of with?

Good questions MM1...there may be plenty of answers in here. It is a wide subject that has many rabbit holes.

it will always pretty much at what the distributor sells tracks for imo.
e.g itunes, beatport, juno etc

if you have a track you would want to get it signed then forwarded to a distributor who will deal with a middle man or the label and sell your track for a certain amount discussed in a pre arranged contract

Cool but what if you're not signed and theres no middle man? because I knew that way,

You guys aren't signed so how would you do it?

I mean can someone just come to me ask for a beat and I say its the best beat then ask them for £100?

oh right, you mean as in session type stuff, well you wont be selling beats but rather your skill as a producer? i suppose you can either do it many ways

charge by the hour

get a portfolio type folder and the customer just picks the beat they want and you charge what you feel is right, come to an arrangement

word of mouth will usually be the biggest way of promotion for you, friends wanting beats to drop vocals on etc

also you can arrange with an artist to do a collaboration and wait to see if it sells to take a share but make sure your contract is tight

Hey MM1
This whole culture of selling 'beats' is not something I'm completely familiar with.. I typed in 'beats for sale' (try it) on a global google search and there's a huge amount of individuals selling their 'beats'. Maybe check through their sites and do a bit of research on your view of the 'quality to price' ratio.. Also, be aware of 'usage' rights.. is the person purchasing your 'beats' licensing it exclusively or non-exclusively, is it an outright purchase allowing the user unlimited, non-royalty paying use of said 'beat'?

Technically too, what do you deliver.. a loop with all constituents, or individual 'parts' to allow breakdowns etc..?

Bloomin' minefield if you ask me

This recent DV Forums thread should be of use with regards selling actual music online
How do i start a Digital label?

Thanks Sureno i'm just hoping when the time comes I won't rip people off, they'll go away with the beat and £100,000,000 poorer I play it a couple hundred times then they and myself realise it wasn't a good beat or not professionally done

great!
