Default Mixing guitars - Idiots guide?

Hello chums

I'm doing a little something for some pals of mine on a non music forum. There's a few guitarists on there and one of them posted an idea about doing a track over the net and I foolishly popped my head up and offered my mixing services.

Are there any real pointers as to how you guys mix rhythm and lead guitars, EQ and panning etc. So far i've run a rough guitar part through some basic Cubase distortion-Vintage Warmer-Sandford Reverb (bright room for ambience) and it sound ok I think, I've also low cut it quite hard and given it a tiny boost around 2-3k (from memory).

I'm quite enjoying it too

Oh the first track is a cover of foxy lady btw so that's the kind of style we're trying to achieve.

There is no cookie cutter for guitars. You need to do what that guitar track needs in the context of that song.

That's not what I was asking for. I was looking for pointers, tricks and tips.

If somebody asks me about EQ etc for my usual style of music then i'd suggest cutting at certain frequencies, ducking etc. Another member here once told me there were certain frequencies to look out for in male vocals and it helped immensely from that point forward, without me having to spend days and days using trail and error.

Thanks though.

The trick with guitars is record them right on the way in. Know what sound you are going for and capture it using the right mic in the right place, the right guitar through the right amp. Honestly, you "think" that cookie cutter approach is helping you but it's actually holding you back because until you do that days and days of trial and error (though actually it's more like weeks and weeks) your music will never achieve everything it's capable of. If you don't like that answer, well I'm sorry but in about 3 years time you'll realise I'm right.

I think I probably worded the question in the wrong way in the initial post.

I've never tried to find a cookie cutter fix to whatever i'm trying to do, and I can't really control the input chain as parts are being sent to me via email.

It's not that I dislike your answer as I believe you to be correct. It's not an answer to my original (possibly badly worded) question however.

We all do music in different ways and for different reasons though. I shall continue to learn from your vast experience.

I've just been to the doctors and he said I had Swine Flu, a common cold and Influenza. He asked me to cough and he said I sounded terrible. He booked me an appointment to see Sir Trev. He said Sir Trev would have me sounding better in no time as he is the best in the business at mixing catarrhs.
