Question Bussing Plugins in Pro Tools. Please Help!

I am stuck on something and would really appreciate any help. It relates to bussing plugin effects.

For example:

I understand that to do a simple bus you could set the send on the original track to bus 1 & 2 and the input on the Aux track to Bus 1 & 2.

However, if I want to use a plugin on more than one track but different effects from the same plugin on each track how would I go about it?

For example if I was using Guitar Rig chorus on Track 1 and Guitar Rig distortion on Track 2 and wanted to buss - I assume I cannot buss them to the same auxillary track as there would be the same effect on both tracks.

I'm sure this has a simple answer but it's one of those silly things and I'm stuck

Never used Pro Tools but couldn't you load up a second instance of GR to get the second effect? Is there such a thing as an effects track in Pro Tools that you can set up for FX?

Yes, you would need to do two seperate aux tracks/bus paths with two instances of the plug-in in question if the settings were to be different.

I haven't got into PT yet as I'm currently getting to know Logic. However, from what I understand, it's not possible to do what you want like you are saying. You would have to instantiate two instances of GR, as tehlord has said, one on each aux.

I see. Well, this is fine as long as doing this is easier on the memory/CP usage than just adding the plugin on each track.

Thanks for the speedy reply guys. Wasn't expecting that!

I wouldn't imagine it would make much difference to your CPU usage as either way you'll have 2 VSTs running.

Unless the Chorus in GR is extra special there are possibly VSTs out there that will use less CPU though? I've heard GR is quite CPU intensive but then again I've never used it.

Quite possibly. I'll be using a lot of GR and other plugins on other tracks which is why I was looking into bussing in the first place.

Earlier tests I did said I was running out of memory and my set up has more than enough so I was told the best thing is to bus my plugins.

I have say Addictive Drums for a beat, 2, 3 or 4 guitars, synths etc....

Well bussing a reverb makes sense as each track can take as much as it needs from basically the same reverb VST. Wont work if you want a plate on drums and a hall on vocals though.

I'm guessing here but running out of memory probably has more to do with the amount of audio loaded into a project than the VSTs used.

How much memory do you have installed? What are your computer specs?

I would only normally have 2 or 3 guitar/bass tracks (using Gr), Drums (Addictive Drums) then some vocals as a basic set up.
