Default New project - Moving from a multitrack tape to a DAW

Hi all,
I'm going to be making a start this weekend on moving an old album I made back in 1996 form one of these Akai 12 track machines onto my computer.

I used an SR16 drum machine and an SM58 mic for everything, so I'm not going to be able to create miracles, but I want to re-do the drums with BFD2, maybe the bass and use my fangled new 21st century tools, hopefully I can make a vast improvement on it and put it out again.
I also got some old 1980's tapes of Kofi Baker's 'Karizma' recordings by John Simms (who is kindly bringing his dusty old 12 track over to my place). He managed to pull off a quite astonishing drum sound considering he used mostly SM58s and a couple of old PZMs so I can't wait to see what we can do with that, hopefully, he will release it!

I got a question though. The only way I can think of to do the transfer is to go out of the direct outs on the 12 track, into my mixer and record into cubase as if I am simply recording 12 simultanious instruments.
Is there any way I can go from the 12 track straight into my TDIF SSOI3's and bypass the mixing desk stage?

I will probably be bugging you guys some more as I go as this will (finally!) be the first proper project I am doing in my studio as it is now, so it will be a good learning experience for me too.

Well, we went through the desk in the end. Its been a long day, 45 songs in all. Now the work begins! Really pleased with the new computer & Cubase SX2 though. I finally finished building it at around 2:30 am this morning, but today it all went like clockwork.
