Default @Saxman - micing your sax?

Im just curious if you record your sax through a mic, and if so what mic?

Ive been vagely thinking of getting a clip-on mic for my alto.

Cheers

I have not recorded for quite a while.
I have used a mic even when playing in a small setting to friends. This allows me to put the sax through some nice reverb and mix the sound with the backing track I play along with. For this I use a Samson AH1 wireless mic ( see attachment ).
The wireless mic works well for performance and wins big time on convenience and freedom of movement.
For recording I am sure I would use my condensor mic experimenting with different amount of space between me and the mic.

Wow - thats quite a contraption

I have tried recording through both a stand mounted dynamic and large diaphram condensor as well - as thats what I have, but was thinking about getting a decent clip-on mic for better level and tone consistency.

What I should really do I know is to not move as much

For spot micing a sax I'll usually put up either a LDD such as the shure sm7 or a ribbon. In terms of distance I find that about the same distance from the bell as the length of the sax works consistently well.

But if moving is a big issue, yes one of the clipons can work well. One of the sennheiser clipons (can't remember which one) is made for this job and works well. Seem to remember I gave some options on this in another post.

Edit. Here it is: Recording horns
