Trev is spot on as usual. A stereo pair of decent ribbons would be fabulous...Cascade Fat Heads are one of the best deals in the audio industry right now.

There can be very significant differences depending on the make and model, but chances are you'll be okay with just a regular pair of the same mic. If you can afford it get a matched pair though.

A pair of Fathead IIs for $375 - that's fantastic value.

How do they hold up against the Royer R121 and such? I love the Royers, but these are great value.

I have the version with the lundahl transformer which holds up very well considering the price differential. From memory frank has the stock version which he has told me also holds up well (I'm sure he'll pipe up if he disagrees).

I used one as a mono room mic for drums only yesterday. I'll stick up an unprocessed file later for you to have a listen.

Nice to hear how that sounds. I hope DV gets these in stock as I couldn't locate any dealer who sells to Finland.

Very kind of you.

I have the standard FHII's, and they hold up *VERY* well. They're not as detailed and open on top as the R121's are, but the difference is not huge. Considering that the Royers are literally five times as expensive, it's a no-brainer. I go between my SM7, my FH's, the MA-200 and the SM57 about 90% of the time.

I gotta say the Lundahls are really very open on top for ribbons so maybe that's where the difference lies.

Hopefully everyone's now listened who wants to? Am going to take the file and link down unless someone asks me to hold fire.

Sounds natural. How was that mic positioned? Thanks for your efforts.

About 6-7 feet in front of the kick drum and at about the same height as the drummers ears.I had a large (8ft x 4ft x 8inch) bass trap/gobo placed about 3-4ft the other side of the fathead (bear in mind it is figure 8), so about 10ft from the front of the kit.
