It's a solid product...I would buy it myself if not for its limitations compared to my existing software options but when one uses Reason based on it's strengths (to be fair) it is a very good product indeed.

I love it for it's ease of use. In particular recycling with drums.

However, now that Ableton has come along, and does all the slicing and snycing in a much more straightforward fashion, I may be tempted away. That said, Thor is an incredible sounding thing, and I still like some of the Malstrom bass patches. I've got some wicked refllls for it as well, so I think it was still money spent well. I will still be using it in a couple of years time, just not the way I used to.

Well, here's a spanner. I recently declared myself "OUT" when it comes to Reason... but I got an email the other day with a special offer from the UK distributor offering a Reason 4 upgrade plus Abbey Road Keyboards, the bass, drum kits 2 and piano refills for £199 all-in...

That's pretty damn tempting, actually, if only because the Abbey Road keyboards refill is normally £149 anyway, and the v4 upgrade is about £70.
Plus I could then also get the Jason McGerr drums refill which I've sort of been half-interested in as well (it's free, but only works with v4).

Any thoughts? Is it worth me diving back into this *strictly* to use it as a glorified VI rewired to PT or Logic?

Hmmmmmmm...

i could never understand why people love reason so much..the studio i used to work in had it but i thought it was too gimiky and the gui was to confusing at times..i love proppeler heads rebirth but hated reason 4 ..but i must admit the one thing i did like about reason was thor i thought that was a beast of a synth and wished theyd sell a standalone version so i could use it in cubase.

PS - I opted NOT to buy in, in case anyone's wondering. I knew that even though I'd have all those extra sounds I wouldn't use 'em.

I recently jumped from Reason 2.5 to 4. Not actually installed 4 yet as I'm waiting for my new PC components to arrive to put everything on a new PC build, but... Reason is almost indispensible for me. Danny Adler of SGX fame has been my guru on Reason.

Sure, it has it's limitations, but within that, I love what I can do and how quickly I can do it powerful instrument sets, vast automation options and rock-solid stability... The sequencer sucks balls really. With 2.5 I couldn't change tempo mid-track and ended up having to slave it to Sonar just so I could change it up...

...but for all it's flaws and foibles, I have a special place for it... (thinking about it right now, probably because the interface, layout and instruments work so nicely)

I'm hearing a lot of good things about Live though... so may be tempted some time...

Interesting how a bit of binary coding and a GUI can evoke sentimentality and affection.. Must admit that's happened to me too in years gone by.. (Metasynth, Hyperprism, Steinberg Pro16, Rebirth etc etc)
