Hey, learned something interesting today.

Spotify pays 1p per listen, on average, as I mentioned to you before. This number though is constructed of both payments to artists and payments to advertisers (I don't think bandwidth is in the equation here, so that costs them extra too, bear that in mind when looking at the bigger picture).

Guess how much the label/distributor gets of that 1p (at the moment)?

The number is so low I can't even express it properly on a forum.

Divide 0.606 (roughly the number of pence that 1 US$ is worth) - by 1,793.

That's how many plays it took for one artist (who is also his own label) to receive one dollar from Spotify in royalty payments.

So if you imagine that your record company/distributor is also shaving some off the top... (or maybe a lot!)

It's gonna take you a LONG time to get rich from Spotify...

The same artist makes well over $10 for selling a couple albums via iTunes...

OMG - even at the 2000+ plays a day Im getting with that remix (which aint on spotify or any other paying player) - be ages before I could even buy a pint

Loads of people at work listen to stuff on it all day - I keep telling them they are participating in ripping off artists!

Yes - I've been making little changes here and there. Googles bring me up on the second page - not good
