A small word of warning. Unless you have express right to post remixes of other people's work I'd be very wary of doing so in the current climate. The labels are actively pursuing people who do so at the moment.

I was going to ask some questions related to this.

If a remix is for a competition, does that mean it can only be uploaded to that particular website or is it free for uploading anywhere you like? If it is not going to be a commercially released rmx, is it okay to distribute it?

Strictly speaking, this is of course true. And not that we condone or recommend any illegal or illicit use of samples etc, but there are of course, tens of thousands of un-commissioned remixes & mash-ups floating around cyber-space (for streaming and download). The vast majority of these will not even tickle a record companies interest due to the HUGE amount of work/cost needed to police the entire internet. If however, one of these 'productions' gains a high profile, then there's two usual results - The producer of said work will get a 'cease and desist' notice and possible follow up action - OR - a request from a (perhaps more forward thinking) copyright owner to acquire the master of the track to licence it for public consumption, so the work becomes a legitimate release (and this has happened quite often). In the case of the latter, sometimes new careers can even be birthed from a single successful remix/mash-up....

Pretty much a case of 'you pays yer money (erm, or not as it where) and yer takes yer chance'!

Although t'is often easier to beg forgiveness than permission, let's not forget that acquiring the rights to samples etc AFTER something has interest/popularity/momentum is going to cost a hell of a lot more than if one did their due diligence ahead of time...

Wise words and again, very true.. but the acquirable rights cost would mainly apply if the 'instigator' was an actual label that (foolishly) put the work on the open market for downloadable purchase.. which of course is tantamount to 'bootlegging for profit'. Not good!

First of all for those who mention that they don't make profit from their re-mixes, that isn't relevant to potential loss suffered.

Absolutely right. The labels' strategy on this (much like with the previous napster type issues) is to simply choose one or two innocuous nobodies and completely bankrupt them to a huge fanfare of publicity. Not a 'nice' thing to do but guranteed to send the message loud and clear. I guess what people have to do is weigh their chance of being the innocuous nobody against their chance of being the person rocketed to stardom. Like was said above, you pays yer money and takes yer chances.

Cool. I'll send your details to my label contacts. I think we have our hapless nobody ;-) (joking, joking)
