Question Pro Tools Tracks Question

There is something I fundamentally do not yet understand as someone more use to analogue recording.

I am used (when I used analogue) to recording my guitar with different effects at different points on one track.

Now I'm using Pro Tools.

If I use one effect (let's say Guitar Rig Tone 1) on a track, how can I then return to the same track later in the song and use another effect (let's say Guitar Rig Tone 23)

So far this makes Tone 1 earlier in the track revert to Tone 23. Any way I can use different effects at different times on one track?

I suppose this would apply to my keyboard tracks aswell as guitar work.

I guess this ties in with my Bussing Thread:
Bussing Plugins in Pro Tools. Please Help!

Any info would be appreciated.

Bussing is one option. Basically, you need to get to grips with how automation works.

You can have two (or more) GR plug-ins inserted on one track, and simply automate the bypass on each one (so that effect 1 shuts off and effect 2 switches on at the same time, for example).

The other option which is easier is simply to create a new track, move the guitar parts that require a different effect onto that one and have a seperate plug-in chain (although DSP-wise that will get a bit demanding faster than the other options).

You can also automate your send levels to achieve a similar thing.

The answer is the same as t3 gave you earlier. You either need to automate the plug to change tone (not sure you can do it using presets) or use a different instance of the plugin. Think of it this way... If you were in the analogue domain what you are actually talking about is recording a different guitar track.

Many thanks for the swift replies. I will have a look and see if this makes sense to me when I'm in front of it!

I've never tried automation of any kind so working out how to automate the bypass will take me some time I reckon!

http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...9&itemid=34669

Google will bring up countless tutorials and even videos on how to do it. It's quite simple, actually, but once you delve into it this is where you start to realise why people buy control surfaces like Command|8s etc, they make it SO much easier!

I have a Digidesign 003 Factory. I'm hoping this will assist me in this regard somehow.

That makes more sense. I assumed (I know 'ass' 'you' 'me') the OP was trying to save on processing power.

This would indeed be the main reason for fudging it like that. I had to do it once on an older computer, but not recently. Was able to rig some kind of MIDI patch change (it is possible) but the guy I was recording with set it all up. I'm not too hot with that kind of voodoo sometimes.
