Default A Mac problem or a Pro Tools problem?

Hi, I've purchased the Pro Tools LE 8 upgrade and installed it on my Mac. I'm using an Mbox which works fine in Garageband/iTunes.

It said installation was successful but it won't allow me to open the program.

When I try to launch Pro-Tools it begins to open, but just crashes instead. I then get the dreaded 'The Pro-tools program has quit unexpectedly please click here to send a report to Apple if you wish'.

This is a newish iMac and I have had this happen to me occasionally in the past with iTunes and Firefox, but only when I've had the program opened already. It has never crashed on me before when opening a program. I need to open Pro-Tools so I can enter my authorisation code it but it won't even let me launch it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

does a Pro Tools splash screen appear before the crash? if so does writing flash past while loading and does it hang on a plug in or any other device before the hang?

Yeah it's all loading up but as soon as it gets to loading 'surround mixer dpm' it quits.

Any ideas, thanks?

Do you mean updates that may have come after the version 8 I've just purchased, or updates from earlier versions I've had?

This computer has never had pro tools on it before.

I was under the impression that the Pro Tools LE 8 'upgrade' was really a stand alone application that would work without any previous versions of Pro-Tools needing to be installed, as long as it had compatible digi hardware attached (an Mbox in my case).

Go to the digi website and use the appropriate combi updated
. Also set the mac so it does not look forautomatic upgrades

just read your post again... if you bought the upgrade you probAbly need a full licence for 7.4.

It's also worth noting that whilst you have just purchased the item, there is normally a good chance it has been stuck in a stockroom for awhile. In the meantime the companies will have issued an update...

1. Download the Mac cs3 update here: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...4&itemid=23300 - install it.

2. Repair your permissions - in the Finder window (ie, the desktop, select Go->Utilities and when that window pops up select Disk Utility. Then pick your startup disk and click 'Repair Permissions.'

3. Try PT again. If it fails on the same plug-ins, go to System Disk->Library->Application Support->Digidesign->Plug-Ins and remove 'Surround Mixer.dpm' if it's there (ie, drag it to the trash, or to somewhere else). Then try PT again.

Report back! Hopefully this will have either solved your problem or at the very least will change what it takes to crash PT and we can figure it out further...

You shouldn't need any previous version of PT to get this to work, there's something else messing it up, so we need to work out what that is.

Terminal3, that's nailed it I think.

I removed the offending plug in to trash and it opened up without a hitch. I have now authorised it and all seems well.

Will removing the offending plug in affect my system in anyway? Will I miss it, and can I get it back if need be?

I really appreciate your help with this, thanks again.

Thanks to everyone else who took the time to try and help me out too.

I'm pretty sure the plug-in in question is not relevant to LE mixing without the Complete Production Toolkit (in which case you'd need to get a new interface anyway) - so unless you plan on dropping £2k on that then it's not needed. A reinstall of Pro Tools would bring it back. If you haven't already permanently trashed it and want to keep it onhand there's a Plug-Ins (Unused) folder in the same subfolder as the "Plug-Ins" folder you can drop it into for safekeeping.
