The only difference is that it needs an iLok plugged in all the time to work, like Cubase.

then yes getting another ilok should work, means you will just have 2 instead of 1 plugged in

I've emailed Digidesign about this just to double check, in theory it should work but then maybe the 7.4 and 8 need to be together.

Argh it's confusing!

I've tracked him down and got his account details!
The easiest way I can see of doing this is to transfer the Pro Tools 8 license registered in my name to his account (which is also now in my name) and then download it to that iLok.

Yay or nay?!

If both iloks are now in your name log in to ilok.com and you can freely move licences between ilok keys

You don't need a new ilok. You only have to pay the $25 transfer charge.

Makes far more sense tbh, and then I can have it registered in my name.

Well I got back to uni last night so got my iLok that had been waiting since Friday for me - and it works

Loving the new look, still need to get to grips with the new midi editor though!

Hi Maccy,

I have the exact same issue as you. I am now going to send the ilok to the original owner and ask him to transfer the license from hi ilok account to mine.
Since you have gone through all the process last year, I was wondering if you could give me some insights:
How many licenses are there to transfer? is there one that is proper to protools and then other ones for the plugins or are they all consider to be 1 license?
if not, how many are they? and do you think it's worth transferring them all (are the 7.4 plugins working on 8.0)
Thanks for your help.

AFAIK, it costs to have a license transferred from one account to another.

I presume you purchased Pro Tools under your account but using a second hand iLok that already has a license for it?

I think your best bet (and to avoid hassle) is to purchase a new iLok and then download the license from your user account onto it.

Well, like you I purchased it second hand and got the ilok from previous owner. The licenses are registered on the previous owner account, therefore i cannot upgrade the 7.4 to 8.0.
What i m thinking of doing is to send the ilok to the original owner so he can transfer the licenses to my ilok account. Of course, the problem with this is that I ll have to pay the 25$ fees for each license, and since I don't know how many licenses they are in 7.4 (counting the default plugins it comes with), I m not sure how much I would end up paying. Any idea about this?
Also, If I understood well, you found a way around paying these fees. Did you transfer the licenses to a new ilok using the previous owner account, and then registered the ilok to your account?

Thanks for your insight!

I just purchased Pro Tools 8 from the Digidesign store online, bought a new iLok from DV and when that arrived, I downloaded the license to it. Simples really!
