Good morning Stage sound,
Production costs, no, I meant that of fitting it to a valve amp. Why would making fine wire coils be a bother to folks like AKG and Beyer? They have been making dymo mics for most of a century? I neither have the time, energy or resources to research it but I will bet you several Guinuiseesseses that 8R phones were unknown, at least to Joe P until the emergence of relatively cheap (and relatively nasty) transistor amps from the Far East. I remember, being involved with a small AV/PA/recording firm* at the time we had a couple of pairs of K60's, 600R if I recall, I was astonished when I saw an advert for some 8R phone. Chocolate teapots I thought and most of the Audio press, Studio Sound, Hi-Fi News, Wireless World were with me! I do not have access to "proper" desk circuits (thanks for the one shown, pretty bog standard for "high end" monitoring I would have thought? I bet the crossover THD is nothing to shout home about!). Ones I have seen consist of a TL072 driving a complimentary pair in a bastardised "current dumping" configuaration or the use a Walkman type chip and bow to lowZ phones. Damping: Almost all "hi fi" drive unit have a DC resistance 60-70% of nominal Z (git amp speakers are a breed apart!) thus, having a damping factor of better than ten when there is an unavoidable 5Ohms minimum in series is pointless, As I am sure you know S.S, a very low output resistance is just a consequence of transistor amp design, you don't have to try! It seems (contributions please!) that h/p R's are some 80-90% of nominal Z so even a short circuit would have little effect. As for coil inductance, well, going to be low and with the Z/DC resistance ratio being as it seems, the things appear to be their own current source driver ( like a tape head circuit) and it won't matter diddlley. As for the reviewer (meddling, unscientific ***t) I suspect he just changed the formant resonance and Mr Maxwell or Mike F had little to do with matters! Dave. *monitor speakers were KEF driven from Quad 303's, no h/p outs on THOSE babies! |

Clearly open-back though, so I hope that emoticon isn't tracking.
