Although I don't do any professional style mixing stuff like some, I just use the headphones to spot any hard to hear anomalies or just to focus on what I'm hearing. I find them good for that but I prefer 'mixing' (which amounts to adjusting the track volumes) out of the monitors.

That's exactly the way I think it should be. Compose and mix a bit as I go...

Then Headphones will pick out any and all true 'flaws' and then the monitors are what I'll use for balancing and mixdown before le mastering...

Headphones are so useful for detecting phase issues (or controlling/panning VERY wide stereo images) and out of control bass. Also useful for finetuning reverb without having to have the speakers up really really loud (I don't like driving my monitors hard anyway because I have to have them so close in my tiny room!)

I've used my HD650s in those scenarios and more countless times, and they really can save a lot of time.

In terms of good headphones for mastering and mixdown monitoring, I would always recommend a pair of HD600s or 650s in your arsenal. Some people swear by AKGs, personally I prefer the totally openbacked Sennies because they just sound so ridiculously good.

They're also pretty rugged, totally modular and... Well, once the drivers are run in a bit (using audio from sites like http://burninwave.com , which is a really useful site) they sound even better. I have hearing problems with my right ear (it's not NIHL, however it is damage through injury) which makes it far more sensitive to midrange and sibilance. The 650s never fatigue, are so comfortable to wear and they even warm your ears up a little bit by keeping them enclosed all the time (due to their circumaural design)... Ideal for a cold studio

I use DT770s for a quick check in the studio and tracking vox and drums.

Great headphones for FOH too.

Like moniters, it comes down to personal preference. I nearly bought the AKG K702 until i saw the Sennheiser HD650. So gang, which is it to be?
