Default Limiter for distortion protection?

Hello,

I am in search for a limiter to protect the AD converter in my soundcard. I always record uncompressed to be able to do everything with software later on (the specs of newer cards allow me to do this without too much noise) but I am still worried that the perfect take will be ruined by a small digital distortion.

So I am looking for a cheap, transparent limiter that should never do any work, it is only there as a security measure. Anyone have any ideas of good candidates, it has to be transparent because it is not supposed to do any work (no compressor)!!!

Thanks!!!
Robert

Why not just ride the fader and track at lower levels? If your system is 24 bit you've got all kinds of headroom.

Unfortunately, the most transparent limiters are digital ones.

If I absolutely need to protect my AD, though (I do admit there are circumstances when it's necessary, esp. location recording), I use a DAV Electronics BG6. It's 10:1 in limiter mode (it can be switched to a 2:1 compression mode if you want, though), and is about as transparent as I've found in hardware for less than a disgusting amount of money. It's about 500.

Cool, if that's how it works then I'm gonna start a thread about time travelling DeLoreans and see what happens then!!

Joking aside, they're simple but very nice-sounding boxes - about as transparent as it gets in the compression world for under 3k (and it's waaay under 3k!).

You should carry the BG1 as well, it's a lovely little pre for the money.

Yeah if you could just tell us what vendor does the DeLoreans... :P

Cheers, I'll suggest the DAV BG1 to our Decision Makers, too...
