Default Recording a Band on a Budget DAW/MTR ???

Hi

I am trying to find the best gear to record my band,

i have a basic knowledge of protools, cubase and reason and already have an m box but was thinking of going the digidesign route, also i have been advised that a multitrack is a cheaper and simpler option.

What is the best of everything to use the budget is £2500 or there and there abouts, the band consists of Drums, bass , 2 guitars, keyboard and vocal and already have high quality amps etc, the room isnt to bad either.

Thanks

Roj

Well tbh if 2.5k is what you have to play with your probably going to be better off just going to a studio and recording as although 2.5k will get you a nice amount of equipment its not gonna get you a nice room to record in as well.

If you have a room to record in then its a different ball game. Id still probably suggest not to go down the route of protools as your going to spend an aweful lot of money just to get the required amounts of ins/outs needed to record a kit/band. Cubase or one of the other DAWs that allows a range of AIs to be used is probably going to be the best option. A good soundcard could be picked up second hand, something like the m-audio delta 10-10 maybe a good option as theyre fairly cheap and you can chain them together for a maximum of 32 inputs (if you need that much).
good mics is going to be the problem again tho as theyre damn expensive, shure drum mics are a good solution if your on a budget or if not theres cheaper CAD and Samson options but your still going to need a good set of overheads which is where the £££ racks up. For guitars 57s and a nice condenser are great and if you pic your overheads careful and buy something like an Audio Technica 4033/4040/4050 then you can use this on the guitar too. Bass can be DI'd and a kick mic used. Vox your going to want a nice sounding mic im presuming and thats yet again going to eat into the cash.

The final problem is that what your playing may not suit any mics or bits of outboard that anyone may suggest and it would be a real shame to spend out on gear that doesnt suit your style of music as its obviously money down the drain. Look into studio costs before making a decision as if you get the right studio they should have enough gear and mics to suit your needs and a much better end result would be achieved.
