Default Avalon VT737 Limited Edition

Quick Headz Up: The Avalon VT737 Limited Edition will start shipping in the UK within in the next few weeks. How cool does this look, matt-black with blue LEDs!

I'd give it a 5/10...no kidding. I really don't like the Avalon stuff, never have. It's not *bad*, exactly...it's just not anywhere near stellar, and for that price I'm definitely expecting to be blown away. Doesn't even compare to my favorites: Great River, Chandler, Pacifica, API...not even in the ball park.

Take what you would have spent on a 737 and buy a 500 series lunchbox and a bunch of API and Pacifica modules. You'll never regret it. I'm assuming your converters and monitors are killer...if they're not, forget preamps entirely and upgrade those

Frank

Not an Avalon fan.

John Davis, a mastering engineer who may or may not still be at Alchemy Soho (they went into adminstration in August, I've heard a rumour he's at Metropolis now) uses a 747 and an AD2077 in his mastering chain, though, and I have a lot of respect for his work.

For me, I'd look elsewhere. Like the new colour though, I think it's sharper than the white faceplate of yore. But we don't spend hours looking at our records anymore...

Anyway, Frank's advice, as usual, is spot on. Put your cash into a lunchbox or at the very least some Chandler kit.

Also not an avalon fan. I'd put this in a similar camp to the focusrite ISA series. It'll do an okay job but nothing exciting.

It's not, however, very different to the black faced mercenary version of yore which superceded the purple knob silver faced version prior to that!

I suppose new products like these are a great temptation for newbies who have heard that so-and-so is using one. As always gents, your advice is invaluable...that's another one that doesn't even make it onto the wish list!
