You can probably keep a solo going longer than the usual "length of a chorus or verse" by changing the underlying chord progression or changing up in key... but still be wary of ending up with something that "goes nowhere" if you get what I mean.

that is a good idea... might also add a verse and duck the guitar down in the mix under it...
