Default Mackie vs competition?

Hi All,

I'm a newbie at this so forgive any nonsense I talk. I've been asked to source a small pa to be used mainly for announcements and background music. Budget is <800. I've been looking at a pair of Mackie 350's. My first question is if Mackies are the way to go or if any of the cheaper brands stack up? Also, someone questioned their reliability to me.

The second question is can I later add a pair of active bass bins to add to this setup if I want a bit more punch? If so, what should I be looking for in a mixer?
