Default Apple iMovie '08 MP4 Import problem

I'm trying to get a post up on YouTube for other members to take a look at the Edwyn Collins documentary (mentioned in a previous thread here).

Got a problem with iMovie 08 (Vs. 7.1.1)..
The tv programme was recorded on Sky+, bounced to hard disk recorder, a DVD was burned from that..then over to the Mac, ripped the programme with handbrake to create a .mp4 file (still quite large..) and then launched iMovie to maybe cut into two (and much smaller) files..then, phew..to YouTube..
But, iMovie doesn't see or enable import of said file...

Can anyone help pls?

Have you tried converting it to a different video format with Quicktime and seeing if that works?

Also, silly, but have you tried renaming the file so the extension is .m4v instead of .mp4? Sometimes that solves problems like this.

Seems like a crafty suggestion by someone called "bikerdude" at this Appleinsider forum;

I've just finished a project which i've had a nightmare with iMovie trying to import an mp4.

The way i sorted it was to manually go to file>import rather than just dragging the file onto the editor. Daft, indeed - but it worked.

iMovie is a pain in the arse for me, roll on the day i'm able to buy FCP.

If you are using Handbrake. Why not pair it up with VLC media player.

I think that might work better then goign straight to Imove. I'd use these 2 apps to get the file into the right format first...then possibly use Imovie to split in 2 if you so wish.

I did not visit the spamvertised url but I must say I do like to eat cheesecake and Dexter Gordon played a great tune called Cheesecake on tenor sax, so not all things cheesecake are spammy
