Default Gas - 2010!

What's on your to buy list for 2010?!

So far i've come up with quite a restrained list I think :-

Yamaha N8/12 digital mixer (very neat with Cubase)
Upgrade to Cubase 5
A decent mic pre-amp
Some outboard colouring processing
A new dedicated audio PC

Only about 3k worth over the next year

As long as I don't decide on ANYTHING else

Possibly a Korg SV1. Need to try one first though!

An upright piano.

Room treatment, lots of it! Once I get that sorted, I really have no excuses not to be able to accomplish just about anything here other than recording drums, for which I shall make a jaunt to Trev's place anyway.

I might need a new audio interface for doing surround work only... nothing fancy at all, just a box with 6 outputs that are good quality. I'm one sub and three speaker stands away from having a proper setup. Might have a look at the Steinberg MR816X as the Nuendo Control Room integration would be cool, but it probably doesn't even need to be THAT fancy. At the moment, I can do it through an Octopre LE but it's a less than elegant rig.

I believe the N12 is 5.1 capable AND integrates with Cubase/Nuendo

And you've just reminded me that room treatment is up there on my list too.

I'm gonna be really restrained next year...

Cubase 5 upgrade (maybe) and I wanna track down a Steinberg Houston.
And maybe a hardware drum module for some analogue FSU-ing....

I have recently added Komplete 6 to the list.

And already satisfied the craving by buying it

No software plans at the moment apart from a reverb.
I'm waiting for a drop in price on the one or two I have in mind.
I'll probably just update/upgrade the stuff I have but only if necessary.
I won't do it for doing it sake. Most of the companies are offering very little in upgrades lately apart from an extra bit of control. It's all a bit desperate of them.

Who knows? There's been some very good group buys and people selling secondhand software at some great prices, so I wouldn't rule out getting the odd item.

But I need to get a speaker fixed. That'll be costly. I'm tempted to get my guitars looked at by a luthier. They do need it. Once again though, it won't be cheap. I got what I had on last years list and loads more. I wouldn't mind upgrading my PC. I won't downgrade to a Mac just yet.

Time to start a Facebook campaign to raise some funds. IABP v The Music Industry.

I reckon I'll probably succumb to buying Modartt Pianoteq next year, especially since I may be taking a PC out on the road... and have very recently bothered Paul Taylor at the Brum store for my Xmas prezzy to myself - Omnisphere, which should arrive today!

Other than that I'll be looking for:
  • Cables that untangle themselves
  • Software that reinstalls itself on my Win7 64bit PC once I've built it
  • Much stronger coffee
  • A TARDIS to put in the spare room and relocate my entire cramped studio into
  • Really, really strong cheese

After my experience with the utter lack of worthwhile support for the yamaha 01x/i88x I have to say I will never touch anything computer related from Yamaha again.

Hardware good - software and driver support - utterly terrible - expect to get left with an expensive door stop when one day they deceide they cant be bothered and have jump onto the next new bright idea of theirs and abonded existing users (and industry partners too) completely - yet again.

And TBH - their software allways looks to me like some nasty hack writen in VB by some computer n00b.

Some new monitors
A decent HDTV/screen in my room. Probably about 28 inch and Samsung or LG will do.
Max4Live
Some room treatment
A mic reflection filter
New desk to put everything on

My GAS is far and wide-ranging. Little chance of getting all of these but here's what's on the GAS list so far:

A new control room
A 48 channel API desk
A pair of Cartec/Amtecs
A C12
An ELAM 251
A pair of AEA R84s
A pair of Royer R121s
Another KM84
A Vox AC30
A Gibson LP Deluxe
A 1966 Gibson Thunderbird
A 1966 P-Bass
