Default Help me with Firefox!

Don't know if anyone can help but i'm having some issues with Firefox

I've gone through all the forums on Mozilla and done all the troubleshooting exercises but nothing has worked. I've changed nothing, have no added apps/plug ins for the browser.

Basically it's freezing every 5-10 seconds or so for a few seconds. Videos, typing, changing tabs etc just stops. Every 5 minutes or so it hangs/stops responding so i have to force quit and start again.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm going to have to change to Safari if i can't get it working which i'm not right up for

Are you running the latest version of Firefox? 3.5.4 ?
Are you sure there are no plugins? I would expect Java and Shockwave Flash plugins to be there as a minimum. These also happen to be two plugins which can certainly cause bad problems so it is worth keeping them up to date if they are installed.

You can check for any plugins from the Tools menu;
Tools-> Add-ons -> Plugins
I have several plugins including;
Java Platform SE 6 U15 6.0.150.3
and
Shockwave Flash 10.0.32.18

To be fair I am entirely computer illiterate but Firefox does this to me from time to time for an hour or 2 then starts behaving itself again before I really start to worry about it. I generally scream at it and that seems to help.

My ISP has always been a bit dodgy but everything is working fine at the moment on everything else (internet gaming, downloads etc). Started last week or so and gradually been getting worse. Pretty much unusable now.

I lied..

I was meaning more extensions than plug ins, but after having a look through i've got a fair few that might be a cause?

I'm running the latest firefox, got the latest shockwave flash and also got:

DivX web player 1.4
Flip4Mac 2.2.1.11
iPhotoPhotocast 7.0
Java Embedding plug in 0.9.7.2
Microsoft office Live Plug in 12.2.0
Quicktime PLug 7.6.4
Realplayer Plugin 0.0.1d1
Viewpoint Media Player (WPN) 1.0

I can't get on enough (without getting really pissed off with it ) to check all of these are the latest plug ins. Going to delete a few non-essential ones and see if it does the trick.

Cheers for the advice

Here is something that should be quick to try. You can clear the java cache. It is always possible that there is something in there that is upsetting Firefox.

Try flushing your DNS too, I currently have a bad connection and every time the network looses internet, firefox will refuse to reopen browser tabs, often telling me its not responding. Flushing the DNS seems to work for me.

go into your command prompt, and type

ipconfig /flushdns

Hope this helps, may be a completely different problem, but worth trying.

Doesn't matter how fast it is, if it doesn't work for me then it's no good.

I've since reinstalled it and it seems to be working ok now.. I guess i'll never know what it was.

Cheers for the suggestion Iain, there was no need to try it in the end though
