Default Internet Overload

I'm being asked about internet activity on a PC. It appears the received is very high in a very short space of time. Millions and millions. PC seems to be dragging a bit and taking time to load. Can you find the source on the PC as an actual breakdown?

Now mine is not like that. My received is much lower over many hours.

Is the very high amount anything to be alarmed about? I've read in my limited investigations of totals being ginormous.

Hmmm, do you have wi-fi set up on your internet connection for perhaps a laptop around the house? If so, is it secure so that neighbours or passers by can not use it?
Other than that, Windows update can sometimes download a lot of updates at once but not anything that should be considered a sudden huge amount, and if Windows has done that it should be nagging you about it, ie, "updates have been installed, you need to reboot".

Well it mounts up even with no browser on.

I took a look at it yesterday, the overload not the porn, and it was just going up and up - the overload that is.

How does a PC show that it's being used as a host or something like that?

You could try running the free demo of Zone Alarm;
http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en...e-software.htm

Zone Alarm can easily be set up to basically not trust anything to start with and so it asks you "xyz" is trying to access the internet - Allow or Dissallow.
The free trial runs for a couple of weeks I think.

Ideally, I'd like to see a breakdown of what makes up the numbers and then go from there.

Are you on XP or Vista?

Vista has some utilities that might have helped but on XP I really do not know.

I think download bandwidth for most Broadband deals is usually much more than upload bandwidth. I think the PC that has the hgh level of receiving activity may be in use as a Bot (stealth), or someone else used that PC for a period of time (heavy downloads) and the main user was not aware of it.

Also the PC "dragging" suggests a possible Virus as well. Might simply need a defrag though.

Beyond that it could be a number of things but its not my area of expertise.

Have a look at this article it might help.
