Well, it seems the world has not ended but the internet is taking a bit of a strain according to my ISP;
I knew it was all just a scam to get people to use the Internet more!

That's a line that could easily have come out of the excellent book "Ubik" by Philip K Dick, the man who also wrote "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" - the book that inspired the movie Blade Runner.
Amazon.co.uk: Ubik (S.F. Masterworks): Philip K. Dick: Books

I am happily making my way through Philip K Dick's books and others from the wonderful S.F. Masterworks collection.

I'm just glad I waited till now to vote. I'd have hated to be wrong.

And at least the new Marillion album should be here in time for October 21st...

Live webcam of the accelerator here. It's nothing terribly exciting, just some scientists wandering around doing various chores. Quite interesting to watch, though.

LOL. Brilliant.

I was kind of wondering what the new sketch show The Wrong Door might do with the story. I think you've just answered my question.

A couple of things that I really have to point out.

All they did yesterday was test out the two proton beams in both directions. Individually. No particles would've smashed together as they were just seeing whether a full lap on the LHC could be made successfully, so people were panicking for no reason yesterday.

The actual collisions are due to start in October, and will start from a relatively low energy collision and eventually work it's way upwards over the coming years. Even then, the energy involved from the collisions will be equal to being hit by a train travelling at 98mph. Such collisions happen all the time in our outer atmosphere as well from cosmic rays, and yet no black holes.

If a minature black hole is produced from this, it will be about 10 times smaller than an atom, and seeing as atoms are more than 95% free space anyway, there's little chance that it'll collide with anything. Also, if Hawking's right, it'll just dissipate in a flash.
