Default UAD-2 Buffer issue workaround

Just passing on a message sent to us via email from James Wiltshire of The Freemasons regarding his recent UAD-2 purchase

Quote:
UAD-2 ..... Is Unbelievable - Also their website is just so simple for transferring all licences - I got 40 Neve 1081's out of the quad card and it's now my mixing powerhouse

There is one problem which will undoubtedly get fixed but i thought you guys might be interested for the forum as I found a kinda work-around.

The Plug-ins don't always empty their processing buffers on Stop in Logic - This is a common problem and the Focusrite Liquid mix did the same for the first 8 months of it's release .. It's all in the coding of the audio unit apparently but is quite annoying with logic as you don't hear it until logic runs up to a bit of audio on the arrange page - as a result you get a tiny burst of what the plug-in last processed before it starts working on the fresh audio - it's always out of time and very short ...

It's normally fine for just working but on mixdown/ Bounce if you are not careful it will make a right mess ..

2 work arounds -

1 - play the whole track through just before you do a bounce then start from the bar before - that way the last thing the card will have processed on every track it's inserted in will have been silence

2 - Get a small, blank bit of audio and copy it to every single track on the arrange page 2 bars before the start of the track and when you bounce - make sure you start from this point or just before and the card will spit out all it's process buffers just before the song starts and then replace them with the silence - all you have to do then it top and tail the mix

can do you a screen shot if you need one

It's only Logic this happens in from what I can see

All the best
James
Thanks James!

That's not just a UAD-2 or Liquid Mix bug, that happens to me all the time with standard plug-ins as well, and it's very annoying!!

My workaround has always been (1). A full playthrough first, and I always shift the entire song at least a few bars to the right...

My other workaround is to mix in Pro Tools...

Good post though, cheers!

Yeah happens to me all the time too, unless I leave the first bars empty. Same problem, same solution.

Yes its a well documented problem in logic , I just play in some empty space for a second to empty the buffer/cache (whatever you call it) before i bounce im pretty sure there no need to play a whole track through
