Default EW Goliath newbie

Hello all - just got my shiny new Goliath installed and it seems to be working fine. Sort of...

Questions I have right now are:

1 - The font used in the browser is almost unreadable (point size too small, excessive grainy look). Is this a fixed thing or can it be changed? (btw, this is not a screen-res system fonts issue - everything else on this screen looks fine - just Play looks dreadful).

2 - I was expecting a modern vst play engine that allowed umpteen instruments to be loaded would also allow multiple outputs. In cubase sx3 I only see one stereo out marked "left". Am I missing something?

3 - Updates: In Play, if I bring up the About box, it seems to be telling me the version of Goliath (the only library I own). How do I get the Play version number? (so I can decide if I need to d/l install updates)

many thanks in advance...

1. Does yours look like this? (Click the thuimbnail to view it)

EWQLGoliathBrowser.jpg

2. Sorry, I'm n Cubase4 now... someone with SX3 may be able to check for you.

3. Click the "Main Menu" button and choose "Check for Updates":

If there are newer versions of the Play engine availble you'll see this message telling you the new version number to download:

Hope that helps

Thanks Dave, I have it confirmed that EW are looking at the font issue. It looks to me that you have Clear Type running which would certainly help but "running" is the thing I want to avoid - Clear Type has a "price"... I'd rather devote that price to audio rendering.

As regards check for updates, for some reason, Play cannot navigate to my proxy server to make a connection so it craps out with an error message (nothing else on this machine has that problem, btw).

Hi ruzz

Do you have your proxy server setup in system preferences/network properly? Or do you have each Internet using program setup independently. Not all programs “play nicely” with a proxy server set up in OSX, maybe Play is one of them. In which case you’ll have to do updates manually.

Multi-outs with the Symphonic Orchestra in Cubase 4 and Logic 8 (I don’t own Goliath but the Play engine is the same as the Symphonic Orchestra), so if they don’t work in SX3, maybe this is just an SX3 issue? Not good news for you if that’s the case.

I really don't think that it's worth switching off Cleartype for any gain in CPU cycles... it will be such a marginal gain that it's really not worth it, especially when weighed up against the drop of readability of text on LCD screens.

I take your point Dave - I don't have a clue what the actual saving is, I just made a bunch of changes when I first set the box up all of them related to that same phylosophy (all my other screens certainly have CT enabled). My subjective but factual view here is that the browser font choice in Play is the first problem I've had (in two years).

Aside - I hit your link in your sig, Dave. Interesting eclectic mix you have in your influences. We chime together on quite a few too - can't be too many people listing Penguin Cafe in their choices Love 'em.

Tyrone: I stupidly didn't mention this is all Windows XP related but thanks for trying.

Thanks again both.

"Eclectic" should be my middle name

Do you have any of your material online?

There's a fair amount of what I've done with Leigh Thomas you can find via my sig (assuming it's working now). But there's not much there of my solo stuff yet - I really need to get my new stuff up - and out there.

Just had a quick listen to a couple of the tracks on the TSM site... very, very impressive indeed! I shall have a proper explore of the site over the weekend (never ceases to irk me how much "the day job" and gigging leaves you so little time for searching for and enjoying new music and artists ) 'cos so far I'm really liking what I'm hearing.

Oh gawd.. you too, eh? And never mind listening, I can barely find time to complete the tracks I'm working on for (if you saw it mentioned at TSM) my Eve's Well album (which is definitely more "me now" than my earlier cd).

Anyway - thanks for the "listen". And btw, Leigh's album is being reviewed in Maverick Magazine this month (Jan issue out Dec 18th I think). That's causing a few fingernails to look a tad chewed up here

ruzz

p.s. something for your eclectic music shelf... try this... search for Luke Paul Jackson's myspace page (sorry don't have him linked). Especially a song called "Michael's Poems".

Oh cool... bit like Billy Bragg... but more tuneful

Might try and catch one of his gigs... looks like he's based in Kent too.
