Sorry to throw a spanner in the works here
… but have you considered the Vienna Symphonic Library Special Edition? You can buy the parts of it as you need them and they sound really fantastic – many times better than Miroslav in my opinion. You can purchase the string part (the OP mentioned strings initially) for €195 and that contains single instruments and ensembles. Right on your budget ______________________________

Had a bit of a change of heart now, listened to a few more of the Garritan demos and some of them (particularly Beethoven's 5th) sound pretty damn realistic, even the brass sounds- I think the quality of the output is somewhat user-dependent, in that the sounds may be quite flat initially but once you add the right effects a good outcome can be achieved. Given that you get a full version and its damn cheap, am likely to go for the Garritan.

I listened to all those demos available on websites here are some thoughts.
EWQLSO: Sounds like it is only meant to be used to produce movie soundtracks to Lord of the ring type of movies. It has some really heroic horns and brass overall. Strings aren't that good and there is only one string quartet demo song on their site not much strings to be heard else where because of heavy use of percussion and brass. There are 6 choir sounds as bonus in silver version. Needs iLok. Demos can be found here. At DV Miroslav: More traditional, even so much that solo horns only have samples with vibrato. Strings and choir sound nice, I like Miroslavs solo strings guite much. I had a opportunity to demo classik edition and it is easy to use and sounds good overall. Activated online. Demos are here Miroslav at DV Garritan Personal: Really a bang for a buck. Lacks some character, but it needs only 2gb of disk space. Has all sounds including solo and ensemble strings, percussion and even organ sounds. Demos here Garritan at DV VSL Special edition: You can buy all sections separetely or for a good price all sections as a bundle from DV. Has all basic instruments of symphonic orchestra. Requires Vienna key. Best sounding package of what I've found this far. Has a traditional realistic symphony orchestra sound. Best sounding woodwinds I have found(listen to Pavane demo). Even trills sound quite realistic. Demos here |

One cheap and good sounding library not mentioned yet is Kirk Hunters Orchestra with 4 different orchestra options for Exs24 and Kontakt. Starting from 89$ as download. In my opinion sounds good for its price tag. Home page
And demos can be found here. They also have somekind of legato system called legato live and human pitch control. ![]() |

I have decided to go with Kirk Hunter Emerald Orchestra. Question is there are Exs24 version and Kontakt version available which should I buy?
These are taken form Kirk Hunter Studios page: Kontakt Benefits -Ability to control levels of separate parts of intervaLive®. -Keyswitched instruments in Ruby and Diamond show the exact keymap where each articulation is triggered. -More polyphony available to each instrument. -Ability to stuff more articulations into one instrument such as keyswitched instruments. Liabilities -Requires heavy CPU power. -Many features not available globally such as attack curve, filter, pitch wheel controls, velocity attack, envelope ADSRs, etc. -Each instance on Kontakt has a limit of 16 midi channels. -If you make any changes in Kontakt whether loading a new instrument or changing anything on the interface, Logic will not safely ask you if you want to save the changes in your song before you close it. Exs 24 Benefits -Extremely efficient use of CPU power; you can get more instruments loaded. -Nice global controls on all instruments such as attack curve, filter, pitch wheel controls, velocity attack, envelope ADSRs, etc. -You can load 128 instruments in one song. -If you make any changes in EXS whether loading a new instrument or changing anything on the interface, Logic will safely ask you if you want to save the changes in your song before you close it. Liabilities -Levels of the separate parts of intevalIve® are fixed. (You can change the levels if you know how to edit in EXS.) -Instruments are limited to a polyphony of 64 voices each. -Because of certain programming limitations, some articulations in keyswitched instruments have to be loaded separately rather than in just one instrument. For example, instruments that use mod wheel crossfades are usually in different instruments than those that use velocity-selected layers. |
