I’ll just add a few comments to the already excellent advice.

Well that is an important point. You will have a learning curve whichever software you choose, but if most of your friends have Logic, it’s going to be easy for you to get decent learning help.

Macs are not as expensive as you might think. You can get a MacMini (1.93 Ghz dual core processor, 2Gb RAM, 80Gb hard drive) for £449. DV247 price for Logic Pro is £275. So for £724 you have a usable system with Logic.

If you really hate the Mac, eBay resale prices are very good for modern Macs. You can even load Windows on it if you wish.

In the future, if you decide to go “full Mac” and buy a MacBook Pro, iMac or a Mac Pro, then you can still use the power of your MacMini using Logic node (this enables one Mac to use the processing power of another Mac on a network).

Alternatively you could start with either a white MacBook (2.1 Ghz dual core processor, 2Gb RAM, 120Gb hard drive) for £769, or an iMac (2.4 Ghz dual core processor, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb hard drive and 20” screen) for £849.

That’s what I did. Started with a 2Ghz White MacBook (one up from bottom of the range). I figured that if I really hated Mac (or Logic) I at least had a good laptop. 20 months later and I still use that laptop for writing music with Logic when I’m staying away from home.

Yup – this is the downside. All (and I do mean ALL) of these programs are bad at some things and better at others. That means you really have to figure out what’s important to you so that you can then choose your software.

Khazul’s advice is excellent.

Good idea!

Also look at the refurbished stuff from Apple (they still come with 1 year Apple warranty):

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/hom...ac?mco=MTE2NzY

For example they have a White MacBook with 2Gb Ram for £659 at the moment.
