I don't know of any others that can switch emulation modes. So yes, it does break the rule on emulating hardware, but the fact it can change its colours so easily (and at all) makes it pretty unique to me. There's no way a fet compressor can suddenly become an opto !
My TFPro P38 outboard mastering compressor is an opto comp but it can emulate a VCA design (as well as two styles of tube comps, LA2A or 1176) - simply by flicking a switch. So Logic Compressor = nil points. Not impressed.

That thing costs around 11 times more then I paid for Logic 8. So purely on the basis of value, Logic's compressor should still get some points. Nor do I know of any other software comp that can switch modes.

Altho looking at the tf specs...if it does everything it does on the tin as well as it should... I'd get one if I had the space and money !

Thumbs up DSM video

Cool intro video showing some of what DSM can do:

http://www.vimeo.com/2365432

Forgive the audio, this video is apparently a work-in-progress and there have been some, erm, compression issues according to Paul on another forum. Pun intended here, of course.

Buy this plug-in!! Best £200 you'll spend this year on software if you're Mac RTAS or AU.

Thanks for the link T3, found the video interesting.. Could I ask, as I'm an owner of Sonnox Inflator, do you think a DSM purchase is necessary or essential addition to my armoury?

They are totally different animals entirely. The DSM is based on a traditional compressor, albeit with a twist of course in that it works on frequency as well. The Inflator, although definitely good at louder-ing to me is more about the addition of colour and warmth.

As an outright plug-in comparison it would probably be more fair to compare it to Oxford Dynamics, but the comparison can only go so far as the Oxford plug-in is of course much more traditional as a compressor.

Necessary? Well, let's face it, nothing's really necessary in this day and age. But essential, yes, absolutely! Not only do you get a great straightforward compressor (more on the side of colourless, of course, but that's not always a bad thing) but you have the ability to grab the spectral footprint of existing material and slap it on what you're doing, which AFAIK is a first in dynamics processors. It's been done with EQ to varying degrees of success - Frequ-alizer (Firium under EAS), Q-Clone, and BIAS' Repli-Q all come to mind - but there's no comp out there that can do the same. It's both a creative tool and a problem-solver that way - as is mentioned in the marketing material, to some degree you can even fix lousy mic technique with it.

And I guess the other main draw for me is that it's useful everywhere - it's as happy in the "mastering" phase as it is working on an individual channel. So there's a lot of mileage to be had...

Anyway, if I sound overly passionate about this plug-in it's that I am.. I like new & interesting ITB tools and the thing's got pedigree, that's for sure. It's made my list of desert-island plug-ins indeed.

Hey T3 read your reply and watched the video, can you see this being useful in Dance music, house etc a genre that really likes that pump and overly compressed sound? my first impression was that this plug is for acoustic and vocal tracks that want to keep a decent Dynamic range under compression and still sound natural? however the capture function is very appealing so you just grab a reference track and get the comp footprint from that to use on your mix right?

I think if had a MAC... I would be looking to exhaust Logics 80 FX first! Plenty to choose from in there.

My picks based on previous usage and what I have seen from Logic Studio so far...

All the Distortion plugs, Tape Delay, Delay Designer (wow), Scanner Vibrato and the Fuzz Wah. Lovely.
