Default lost dvd drives

Found both my dvd drives had gone AWOL Sunday.

Very long story but the reason (you will not find on Google AFAIK) is that I uninstalled iTunes!

We had a big C drive clean up Saturday and Son was not using iT any more so we offe'd it.

By various means I have now discovered that Apple KNOW of this glitch but the only cure is some trickey (too trickey for me!) Registry hacks or KEEP iTunes.

HA this is proof, Jay and i think Stage mentioned this when the forum first started, i myself have never experienced it but it seems to be a common occurrence, not only losing drives but crashes and all sorts of problems on PC. JAYDMF and Stagesound are definitely the guys to ask for more info if needed

Very strange problem that is. Thankfully I have agressively resisted Apples determination to sneakily install Itunes on my hard drive quitely along with Quicktime and Safari updates.

Thanks for sharing the problem ecc83.

I think Apple certainly have some work to do here.

My experience of a PC iTunes is terrible compared to the “slick” iTunes on my Mac.

This is very much the downside to the “Apple Wall of Silence” – you never have any idea if bugs are ever going to be fixed, or even if they are recognised by Apple. It’s very frustrating.

I also think fixing that problem sadly is very likely way down the list of Apples priorities.

Well, because I am pc T as S I tend to be very careful what I install on my machines. I always dld demos etc to a spare partition that I can format if I need to. I also believe that"mac is mac,,,pc is pc" I know jack about pc's really and -jack to the N about macs so I leave cross os doodleyflops alone!

But Son (bless him!) needed a lot of tunes for a "project" and the only way to get them legally and at (dads)affordably cost was Apple iT.

Sods'law prevailed and about the same time as the vanishing dvd's I had purchased Uniblues' Reg Booster. This I had run a couple of times and was rather pee'd off to think it had sabotaged my pc. The guy at Uniblue was very nice and helpful (tho' he dint actually SAY upfront his kit was blameless??!!) and a registry restore did not retrieve my drives. Furthermore HE did not come up with the Apple connection either!

I suppose a complete re-install would fix things but I don't have a win med cen ed disc, only a system recovery disc made on day one. This I have no idea how to use but think it will set me back to ground zero and I really cannot be arse'd!

Apple! May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your backsides forever!

Dave.

2 fixes, one is uninstall the DVD using device manager and let windows re-install. second there is a bug fix for I-tunes that works if your DVD drive randomly drops out, should be able to find it easily enough on the net, i havent had to grab it in a while as i have it on a memory stick i use at work

Hi JAYDMF,

I tried everything up from christmas in Dev Mang' and I spent a long time looking for fixes. techsupport.com came up with the Registry surgery but it either did not work or more likely I did it wrong!

Anyway I now have a minimal install of iT **** back, penned in, not default player, no icon, no pratting off to the internet, just be a good boy and keep my dvd players working. But I wish I didn't have to have even that!

iTunes is just one of Apple's mechanisms for sabotaging PCs!

Quicktime is the other...

I occasionally plug my ipod into my PC and I *NEVER* use quicktime - wth do I have:
Installed and running services:
AppleMobileHelperService.exe
iTunesHelper.exe
iPodService.exe

And why on earth does Quicktime have to completely trash WMs perfectly good and generally instaneous mp3 and other media playback?

I think Microsoft only ever did one really really stupid thing (several stupid things perhaps, but only one really really stupid thing) - that was giving $100M or $200M or whatever it was to apple to stop them going under... yes - in case you didnt know - MS are the only reason Apple still exist today...

Wow, so its not just me who detests iTunes on the PC.

I run an XP x64 machine and iTunes would constantly tell me there was an update and prompt me to download and install it automatically. It would fail every time. So I would download it and install it manually, again it would fail. I loathe iTunes and I hated how they bundled craptime with it, good lord that program seriously messed up my machine on various occasions. Im now using winamp as my iPod management program and quicktime alternative as, well, the alternative to quicktime....

OJB is no Apple fan.

Right ok, you on vista or xp ? xp should work using the fixes ive already mentioned, but i shall post up the itunes bug fix file for you tonight.

Vista is a bit of a bitch however as you have to remove the upper and lower filters on the DVD drive settings and its a bit of a chore to get there, i havent got time now to make a walk through on how to do that but if you let me know if its vista, when i get home i'll try and post up a walk through guide on how to remove them. Its a really weird problem that we get all the time this one.

I can understand the rivalry between Apple and Microsoft but I don't want my hard drive being used as Apples battleground.

Strange but yes I recall reading about a bail out for Apple from Microsoft as well. How strange is that now? LOL! The Apple of Microsofts eye.
