Default Notation software

We know Sibelius is the dogs' danglers but we just can't afford it! (got the demo).

Does anyone know of/use software that Son can write scores with, add lyrics, properly spaced, save and sent in a format others can easily open please?

We are prepared to cough £100 or so but £560 for SIB is just not in the kitty!

Dave.

Check these two out: Finale 2008 and Notion 2, they are way cheaper than siberus. I haven't tried them as when i write music i write them in paper sheets but they have +- the same features as siberus.

Take a look at Finale NotePad. It's free and looks like the features are good. I used an earlier version a couple of years back and it was reasonably good.

Here's the link NotePad

Noteworthy Composer. It looks really basic, but it's got some good features in it that get the job done. Plus it's quite cheap as well ($49 = £28).

Thanks guys for all the feedback.

Can you tell me, if my son write scores in any of the suggested programs, can they be easily opened by a Sibelius user?

If you follow the link to NotePad it says "Full compatibility with Finale 2008 and PrintMusic 2008"...so I suppose it's not compatible with Sibelius!

Noteworthy Composer is very cheap compared to Sibelius and would definitely do the job for what you need it for. I used it years ago and found it very user friendly.

Hi Dave,

I must say this is not my area of expertise...but I'll try to help out

If your son uses a Notation package that supports Music XML then it should in theory be accessible to a Sibelius user and indeed quite a few other notation packages that support Music XML up to 100 apps so far apparently support Music XML.

Here is some more information here that looks like a nice write up on the subject. Finally here is Make Music's (makers of Finale 2009) take on Music XML.

Same thing here, I used to use it back at school and found it quick and easy to use. Definately a good piece of software
