Do you prefer dark chocolate or white? (sorry facetious answer but your title is a foolish one - your question is a little more sensible which is why I'm pausing to answer)

I'm a protools user. I like it for the workflow. I record and mix audio, usually for other people and it makes my job very easy. I don't like the fact that they try to tie you to their hardware (which I don't like) but, hey, that's their business model and easy to get around.

the one that gets me a no. 1
this topic can prove quite contraversial but as TCS implies the answer to your question is that the best DAW is the one you find easiest to work with and it does majority if not all of what you want to do

and TCS i prefer white choc so if you where thinking of getting me some

my favourite is logic for composition, pro tools for mixing

If I have learned anything over the past few weeks here on the forums, it is that there are few written-in-stone answers to anything. There are so many variables - the music you make, the machinery you use, your own experience, your expectations, and the tools you use. Everyone will have a different answer to your question.

I use Sonar 7. I bought it basically because it was a good offer at DV. I had used earlier versions of Cubase and Logic before. I was never really gone on Cubase and preferred Logic (but that was when it was still available for PC). I am learning to use Sonar but believe in the long term I will switch to either Logic or Pro Tools. In the interim, I am learning how one DAW functions and how to get the best out of that. I hope the skills I learn will be transferrable to other systems.

What's the best software DAW ever? Silly question as I don't think it has been developed yet. If it had...it would be no fun!!

You need to ask yourself some basic questions e-vinyl.
For example:
  • What type of music do you want to make?
  • What is lacking in the DAW you use?
  • Which other DAW has what you are missing?
  • Why don't you try some demos of other DAWs and see which suits you best?
  • etc.

When you narrow down your needs, I think you can choose the best tool for you! Hope this helps

Agreed, theres as many variations in software and setups as there are variations in the human ear so find what you like and use it. although there is a warning that finding what you like may hit your pocket extremely hard in the long run

Wow, huge question...
I love Ableton Live for speed, ideas and their sexy effects. When I want to knuckle down to some serious editing and the like I'm a habitual user of samplitude. A very deep programme, left over from my TV days.
I wish I could use Abletons effects within other DAWs. That would be excellent. On another aside; I wish Propellerhead would release a VST version of their scream distortion unit. I love that thing so much.

I've used Sonar and thats pretty cool to get your head round.

I guess the other question would be do DAWs sound different from each other? Some people swear that their sequencer of choice sounds clearer, deeper, wider etc... But a test a few of us did the other year showed that audio files mixed down from a couple of systems with the same plugins and settings etc cancelled each other out when phased against ech other...

Strange.

Hi All.

Im a musician, never been an engineer, never been closer to a mixing console
than 5 metres.

Have used Cubase, Vegas, Cakewalk, ProTools Free (does anyone remembers that, came on a CD, needed no hardware), Ableton, and after years and years of using all this stuff I have settled on Mackie Tracktion.

Does the job for me, and super easy to use. Don't think I'll ever use anything else unless someone comes up with something that's even more straightforward.

My 2c

It's true...it existed. I had it but never got the damn thing to run properly on the PC I had at the time so I stuck with Emagic's Logic (don't remember the version) long before Apple got a whiff of their gem!

I'm sure you can still get the free version from the D.U.C

Maybe... But if you can still find it you'd have to be running windows 2000 or mac os5 to make use of it!
