I used reason for a couple of years (i know its not a DAW) , ive used Acid pro 2/3/4 , Ableton live 3,4,5 & cubase sx2/sx3/4 and now i use logic 8 since jumping to Mac.

Cubase , logic , reason i found superb.

Acid pro was just doing silly things when i got more into midi so i moved on to cubase.

Ableton live although a great program i found annoying because Ableton were always releasing new versions before they'd fixed bugs in the previous versions so i stopped supporting them after version 5 , and the operator synth i bought was just a waiste of money no use no ornament now.

Yeah actually the C64 MIDI sequencer (called Steinberg I think...) was wiked, have figured the thing out without having a manual(!) in a day or so, and I was sequencing happily away ever after...

Naturally I would asay ableton Live 7 as that is what I choose to use

The problem with this kind of question is what makes something like Cubase 4 great for some people ir probably nearlyy opposite to what make Live great for others.

I actually have both and use both, but for very different tasks.

If Im doing a more conventional multi-track recording session and mix-down etc, I will tend to use Cubase. If I am working on my own stuff - ie creating and writing - then I will use Live as the creativty strengths of that are what matter to me. Cubase tends to get the job of mixing down stems exported from Live - just because its way better setup for that kind of more rigid process.

On the other hand if I have just recorded a bunch of loops and I am working out what on earth to do with them, or working on a remix and chopping it up and trying things out - then Live wins hands down. Same for Live if I want to do lots of bizarre audio routung between tracks and/or between tracks and external hardware etc.

Also working in Live (rather than Cubase, or for sake fo argument, Sonar or Logic PT etc) has another huge advantage to me - it means the way I work in studio is tighly related to the way I work live - once the new Vestax VCM-600 controller is available - then hopefully I'll get those two aspects near perfectly lined up. I wouldnt even dream of sticking Cubase 4 on a laptop and going live with it however - never mind that the chances of that the cheap nasty dongle surviving in one piece are slim

Given that pro tools HD does something so simple so well ie.:

1. Get tracks into computer with a fixed Latency - no matter how many tracks are armed.

2. Audio Monitoring delay has fixed latency regardless of no. of plugins/processing.

I wanna know why it's taking so long for other DAW to fix up these 2 issues.

If You give us point 1 and 2 with any current DAW, PRO TOOLS no longer has the edge. FACT

Just like Cubase came up with the Protocol for VST, then vst 2, I'm hoping one invents a Hardware Protocol to handle sound in and out of soundcards and resolves issues 1 & 2. Then all DAW can benefit from it.

ProTOols HD is the industries no.1 but expensive.
Logic is my All time FAV. I Imagine a world with Logic in most commercial studios with issues 1 & 2 sorted. ahh coool. and easy on $$$$.

Peace.

Default Sonar 8 for me

I've been with Sonar since No.2. I tried one or two of the others at the time and went for Sonar because I thought its GUI was more 'Window-y' than the others; what I mean is I found it more logical in terms of navigation, etc. I use MS Office a lot at work and at home and Sonar seemed to make sense to me, whereas others seemed weird to me in terms of where they put things.
So, like others have said, it's a personal thing as much as anything else.

After a few years with Sonar it seems to me now that all the different products have pretty well converged now, as they obviously keep a wary eye on each other and 'crib' developments from each other. My gripe is they all like to coax upgrade money from us each year and I find that the law of diminishing returns has set in now, whereby all the major breakthroughs have been made and now they can only tempt us by adding more add-ins, like baubles on the tree.
