Post Mercury Prize Nominees - 'who deserved/who was robbed!'?

The artist/album nominees for this years Mercury Music Prize have just been announced:in full, they are:

Adele - 19
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Burial - Untrue
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Estelle - Shine
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep In The North Sea
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement

Do you have any thoughts as to why each or any of these artists deserve the nomination, or opinions about which excluded artists/albums you think should've made this years list?

Well, I already talked it up in another thread in the Mastering forum, but that Elbow record is pretty damn good indeed. Happy to see it made the shortlist.

I'm also a little concerned about the Plant/Krauss nomination.. does seem only 50% British, and thus maybe shouldn't count, but it is a good-sounding record, so what do I know??

I only like about half of the Radiohead record.

The others I either don't love enough to think they should win or haven't heard!

So I guess I'll have to keep my vote with Elbow.

One record that would have been nice to see on that list is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' latest - 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!' - it's a strong outing as well, but perhaps there's a qualification issue with that considering that most of the band is originally Australian (even though many have long kept the UK as their permanent/adopted home)...?

In any case, I like the MMP, it tends to retain credibility (for the most part) year-on-year when many other awards have not.

Yeah I'm so glad Elbow got in, although It's not a public based vote is it?
It's mutual industry back scratching isn't it?

Not sure if its popularity and the fact that it is everywhere may cloud some peoples opinion on Duffy's 'Rockferry', but McAlmont and Butler did a sterling job production-wise and I thought the songs were great, it's also sold a shed load more than Adele so i'm a little baffled as to why that has been over looked.

Yeah, I used the word 'vote' in a figurative sense, of course I actually have no say in the outcome of the prize.

I think Duffy is a good singer but I don't the record is doing anything new and interesting for music, which is why it's not been nominated. Just my opinion of course, and some might argue that there are other records on that list that aren't terribly innovative, but that, erm, 'vintage' sound of the Duffy album probably isn't what the MMP people want.

Plant / Krauss: An awesome record not just the songs but sonically just very, very good.

The distorted guitar on track 11 (Nothin') is the heavist, dirtiest guitar you'll here ever on a bluegrass record... just fantastic.

Best thing Plant has done for a very, very long time...

Elbow will win IMO
