Default Worth upgrading to Logic 9?

I've just had my 21st and got a fair bit of cash!

Thinking of upgrading to Logic 9 as I can get it cheaper at uni - is it worth the upgrade though?

interesting question not really an answerable one though, what iv noticed is that people are reporting very differing experiences with it. i myself and the way i work found it a little annoying the way a few new issues where introduced, if you where to ask me would i upgrade again id say no, not till an update or two has been issued. However i believe Mr Modz1 is having a blinding time with it not finding to many issues so its a gamble really?

BTW whats the sig all about?

It really depends on what kind of music you write and whether you need/want the new features.

I am running LP9 on SL and it seems to going very well (but I’ve not had time to really hit it hard since I’ve just had a house move and music has been put aside for a while).

If you already have 8 and can buy a cheap EDU upgrade then I say go for it. The updates that sureno mentions will (probably) be out soon – at least if LP8 was anything to go by.

The other point is that LP8 and LP9 co exist quite happily on a system, so if you really don’t like it, you can always (and easily) return to LP8.

O and the sig is a work in progress - been doing a few recordings for people over the summer whilst away from uni so thought I'd put a site together

Back at uni now though

As far as I'm aware, Apple do not offer edu upgrades. I bought Logic 8 for £120 at uni, but then bought the full retail upgrade from DV for £133.
That leaves you with a choice. Buy l9 at student rates, which leaves you with a copy of L8 that under their T&C's cannot be sold on because its edu.
Or buy an upgrade, which I think (but not sure) gives you more flexibility as it is a full retail license.

Generally, from the usage I've had so far.I'm happy with L9. Not perfect, people have had all sorts of issues. But the number of fixes and new features outweigh the flaws that were in L8 and crop up in L9.

This update improves overall stability and provides numerous fixes and enhancements.
Issues addressed include:
• Flex Markers can align & snap to MIDI notes
• Performing a punch-in recording with Replace Mode now behaves correctly
• The I/O plug-in adds an option for latency compensation

The update is recommended for all users of Logic Pro 9.

Logic Pro 9.0.1 Update

This update improves overall stability, provides numerous fixes and enhancements, and is recommended for all users of Logic Pro 9.

Some issues addressed include (but are not limited to):

* Replace mode now functions as expected when Punch Recording.
* Trimming a region now behaves correctly for regions whose first transient is quantized.
* Using "Paste at Original Position" in the Arrange window now works as expected.
* Using track import Replace to channel strip used on multiple tracks in the Arrange window now works as expected.
* Correct automation values are now maintained when one region is moved over another with the "Move Automation with Regions" option.
* Addresses an issue where the Save button on a Logic/Mackie Control stays lit when pressed with some projects.
* The Reassign Track shortcut menu now correctly displays the currently assigned channel strip object.
* Text Only mode for the Toolbar now remains in effect when an option is clicked on the Toolbar.
* MIDI commands can now be assigned to key commands with fixed assignments.
* Clicking solo on a channel strip no longer selects the channel strip.
* Fixes an issue where Logic would quit unexpectedly if the grid value in the Hyper Edit Convert Event definition dialog was changed.
* MIDI regions now play at the correct tempo when scrubbed with the Solo tool.
* Current project Mixer settings are now correctly maintained when importing tracks with "Send all fader values" enabled.
* EXS24 now correctly displays all parameters in Editor view for instruments created in Logic 8.
* Logic no longer quits unexpectedly in recording situations where both a MIDI and audio track are record enabled and the MIDI track is not selected.

Enhancements implemented include:

* It is now possible to measure and provide latency compensation for an external signal chain that is routed via the I/O plug-in.
* You can now snap align Flex Markers to MIDI notes within other tracks in the Arrange window.
* The Automap feature for Novation MIDI controllers now functions when using the Logic Studio plug-ins.
* Apogee's UV-22 dithering algorithm now an option when bouncing audio files.

Wow, your cut n' paste ability is second-to-none, I'll give you that.

But in my experience, what Apple SAYS and what actually HAPPENS are often somewhat different realities... so hoping for a little first-hand know-how.

There is also an update for Mainstage 2, Waveburner...the whole suite basically !

Oddly, Mainstage flags up as an update available via OSX built in updater..but Logic 9 or anything else didn't !

Another point:

After finding the update page, the site asks you to register your copy of Logic.

Well, my Logic 9 upgrade serial wasn't recognised, but my old L8 was..

Well if you say it's ok Paul then I think I may make the purchase. I can always sell on my Logic 8 copy to a friend!
