Default MIDI goes off pitch

This is driving musical son nuts!

He has a score written in Finale Print (demo, but dad is forking out weekend!) and the notes play back at the wrong pitch sometimes or he will find the whole piece has moved into another key.

Also as he plays note in from an Evolution keyboard he find the pitch varies as if he was using the mod wheel.

All this occurrs on an XP pro pc and another which is Win med centreE.

Any ideas folks?

Dave.

Hi Dave
I had similar problems recently with my M-Audio Radium/Logic set-up. I was working on a midi track, playing or recording - then the pitch of the midi part would jump up (or down) for no reason in what seemed like semi tones at a time.

Turns out, it was the Radium keyboard going bananas and chucking out random pitch change data when it felt the urge

Annoying as it was, the simple way I dealt with it was to filter out 'pitch bend' messages in the Logic song I was working in Settings>Midi>Input Filter - End result though - I need a new master keyboard..

Hope this helps..

Thanks for the ideas chaps,

I am pretty sure Son said it did it with any and all software (he's buggered' off down the jazz club with guitar in tow!).

The only common factor I can see is that both pc's use a 2496 soundcard. I could try running MIDI on my fast track pro, latency will be crap because the laptop it is on is only 850mHz! but it could prove, er, something!

Try it out Dave. I doubt the problem is with a faulty midi input on the 2496.

As Modz suggested, I'd check out your pitch bend cc information. If you're scoring software can't display this info, save the track as a midi file and import it into something like Cubase, which will easily show you what's going on.

I'd try another midi cable as well, or hooking the controller up via usb to see if that helps either.
