Hello all.
Just joined on a recommendation from a post on the Digital Spy forums. I work as a producer for a group of UK record labels, specialising in DJ remixes, remix albums and mashups. I would like to start producing my own material as soon as possible. Looks like a busy forum here! Looking forward meeting you all. Cheers John |

Thanks for the welcomes! Actually, I am sure I can learn a lot more from you.
I think people sometimes regard Producers as being on the bottom rung of the ladder, or so it feels. I am not an artist but I would very much like to be. My production work has been quite thin on the ground lately and I have been considering two options: Half of me wants to continue producing mixes and mashups for the DJ market and the other half wants to become an artist and create my own material. But how do you go about doing this? My work has always involved using original copyright material, for which the record company gets the necessary clearance. They pay the fees, the royalties, etc. All I have to do is come up with the ideas and put them together for them. But what if I wanted to go it alone? I doubt there is a way which won't involve huge fees. Are there internet services who take this on board for you? I understand they are happy to do this if is your own (i.e. non-copyright) material, doing the marketing, selling over Itunes, Amazon etc. I need to know how to make a start. Which are the best online services to deal with? Only the other day the BBC carried something on the radio about the pitfalls involved with this, saying how artists are ripped off by certain internet services who pay litle more than a few nuts to the artists but cream off 90% of the money made for themselves. So far, the only information I have managed to find is on these pages: http://www.tunecore.com http://homerecording.about.com/od/du..._On_iTunes.htm I'm sure there must be more. Maybe there are better ones. I would appreciate any help. Thanks John |

Tunecore is probably one of the best routes to electronic distribution of your material.

After some thought, I have a problem with Tunecore and other similar services.
The business model is all wrong. I don't understand why they ask for money first. It sounds like somebody's get rich quick scheme with nothing at the end of it. Maybe this is the way but it doesn't feel right. Those testimonials are of no value. They may not even truly be from those artists. Ideally, it would be useful to hear from 'real' people who have used these services and can report a genuine return from them. Cheers John |

Tunecore is no cowboy outfit, they are well respected within the industry... I know some fellow artists who have used Tunecore with no problems.
I'm not being funny, but I really don't understand why you think paying up front for a service is strange... when did you last buy anything and not pay for it until you made some money out of it? ______________________________

I think the business model is exactly right. First, it's not THAT expensive. Second, you get your music into the biggest distribution channel in the world. Third, you keep 100% of your royalties. If they changed it so you didn't have to pay up front, they would probably have to take a cut of your royalties. And let's face it - lots of music is just not gonna sell. I've read stats that say something like 90% of iTunes revenue comes from 1% of the artists listed. So they're not gonna stay in business long if they take it from the backend. It's up to you to make a great record, promote it and get people to buy it, of course. They are simply providing a service, and a good one at that IMO. Ten years ago how could you have gotten your music into places where people could buy it with one click so easily? Anyway, this is all OT now, but welcome nonetheless! |
