No end of choice in that price range and in fact you'd be able to buy more than one.

I've got a Squire Strat. It does me fine and cost me around €300 a few years ago.

Strats start from around 400. Search DV247.com and you'll find lots of goodies.

It might depend on your level. I think you said you are a relative beginner. Don't be tempted to buy really cheap even if you are. Beginners need good instruments too.

Then think about what sound and look you like. Sorry I can't be more specific. It's a very personal thing. I am sure others will be along to offer their advice.

I just happen to have a spotless handpicked burgundy red 50th anniversary strat and a beautiful '93 Les Paul for sale if you are interested. Might also be persuaded to let one of my Vox's go...

Here's the thread: Huge Gear Clearout

Out of curiosity Trev which of your vox's were you thinking of letting go? Was thinking of getting myself an AD50, would you recommend it?

The ad series are incredible value IMO. Very handy for the studio and very flexible live. The 50 will be loud enough for pretty much any gig you are likely to do.

£1000 is a lovely figure to work with.

Spend some quality time in a DV store! Guitar shopping is a physical thing, especially if you want to match a guitar and amp.

The OP went on to learn the flute and now plays in a James Galway tribute band.

Just thought I'd pass that on.

I'm going to be really controversial here and say that you 100% should not spend that much on your first guitar/amp. It'd be like trying to choose a sports car before you've learned to drive.

Buy a fender squier starter pack and put the rest of the money in a savings account until you at least have the ability to test out a guitar and find what things you find comfortable and sonically pleasing.

yeah, old thread, but I'll reply to this anyway - I don't fully agree - I think that anyone who is going to buy a guitar to start out doesn't need to spend a mint on a custom shop version or anything, BUT I do believe that if you cut too many corners and buy a piece of sh*t made out of plywood and rebar for frets - that can't even be saved with a pro setup - then it will turn you off the instrument forever.

this is where good proper advice and trying a few out on the shop floor will come in handy. savings accounts pay peanuts right now anyway, so you might as well invest in some music!

I didn't say buy a POS though; i said a squier starter pack

Unless you buy used or travel through time you can't really expect to make money on a guitar purchase these days. Maybe the right amp or pedal, but nothing you could get in digital village.
