Have you been using standard tuning? A slide might sometimes be used in standard tuning, but only on a couple of the strings. If you want to slide all the strings then you should have the strings tuned to an open chord. This means you can slide from one chord to another, and points in between.

Cool link saxman! I've just retuned to Open E and am sliding to my heart's content!

Listen to the greats and how their choice of tuning makes a difference to the sounds they get.

For a bluesy sound check out;

Ry Cooder open D or A
Lowell George open G
Duane Allman open E
Bonnie Raitt open G

For more melodic slide stuff listen to;

George Harrison open G and normal

For lap steel check out;

David Lindley open anything. Out of the top drawer.

For Dobro it's got to be Jerry Douglas, the undisputed master.

I think the real challenge is to be able to play with normal tuning, a good example is Jimmy Page's solo on 'What is and what should never be' from Zep 2. Genius!

Here's another tip, use a compressor if you're playing slide, the MXR Dynacomp works best IMHO.

A volume pedal is essential too for managing your dynamics...!

I prefer the "David Gilmour" tuning myself - D G D G B E which is best heard on Breathe, Great Gig In The Sky, Wot's... Uh The Deal, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and possibly Atom Heart Mother.

He also uses open Em - E B E G B E - on One Of These Days and High Hopes.
