Are there many bands/musicians regularly gigging on the general 'toilet-tour' level of the UK?

I've toured in the past under a major's wing and have had a great time on the Sugarmill/Barfly/Warehouse/Koko/King Tut's/etc. level, and it's an amazing experience.

I'm looking to do the same thing with my band next year off my own back.

Has anyone got any recommendations for music-loving venues that book unsigned bands with audiences that just love going to local gigs?

Naturally, I'll do the Facebook/Myspace push prior to going out, but I'm just interested to hear other people's experiences/comments.

Local festivals are making something of a comeback... would be worth researching some of those in your area for some added exposure too.

Yeh, we used to do that. I remember playing this great little festival in Malborough near Salcombe in Devon at a little pub. It was great - lots of stoned hippies, and a big ol' campfire singalong next to their teepee in which lots of naughty goings-ons and messy casualties.
