Default eMail Notifications

Is it just me, or have any others noticed that eMail notifications of new posts in subscribed threads take ages to arrive. Often they arrive several at a time, even thouigh the posts are seperated by hours.

vBulletin has a mail queue that prevents bottlenecks when sending large numbers of emails (for example, when a new post is added to a thread that has a lot of subscriptions to it). By default, 10 emails are sent from the queue at a time. If you have a more powerful server, you can probably safely increase this number, but we do not recommend going too high on this regardless.
vBulletin uses the mail server on the server running the forum. So in this case it is the mail server on forums.dv247.com
If we assume that the mail server on forums.dv247.com is ok then perhaps the vBulletin mail queue needs to be decreased? I am suspecting that perhaps vBulletin is waiting until there are 10 messages in the queue before sending that batch of messages.

Something for the moderator admin guys to play around with perhaps?

+1 but I'm browsing so often il see the reply before the notification. I'm almost 90% sure I didnt even get a notification to a certain post when many members answer in a fairly short period

Thanks saxman - Sounds like a good theory. I just got five together, post times ranging from 8:06AM on 8th, to 12:00 AM on 9th, (almost 16 hour period). They were all sent at one time - 12:03AM.

I've just dug out some evidence to back up my theory.

Vbulletin note about the Mailqueue System;
Quote:
When enabled, subscription emails generated by your site will be processed in batches to lessen the load on your server. Account activation, lost passwords and other vital emails are sent instantly regardless of this setting. If your site has low traffic, subscription emails may be delayed.
The admin guys can try switching off the mailqueue altogether;
Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Email Options -> Use Mailqueue System -> No

No improvement as yet! Just received a bundle of eMail updates for posts which were put up hours ago! As it is at the moment, it's best to just check back every now and again - you wouldn't need to be depending on the system eMails

Thanks - it would be a useful facility if it worked properly.

[BTW, is your eMail system working okay? I've sent a few eMails to you using forumadmin@digitalvillage.co.uk and got no reply, so I presume either my eMails are not reaching you, or your repplies are being lost in the ether...]

Some useless information. "Ether" is a class of chemical compounds, but back in ye olde days, it was "An invisible medium through which all light, heat and electromagnetic waves propagate". The networks which we know and love for connecting up our PC's and Macs was originally developed from a standard which transmitted data using radio waves (used in Hawaii, and called Aloha), and radio waves pass "through the ether" - hence the name "Ethernet". Ethernet was a proprietary name (the system is actually called CSMA/CD - so you can see why Ethernet stuck!).
