I've been researching equipment for a pro studio project and I am looking at two DAW control surfaces, the M-Audio ProjectMix I/O and the Mackie Control Universal Pro. I would go for the Mackie, but apparently no music store on the planet will have it new in stock until next January, so the M-Audio surface is the only other choice, however, I don't want to use it as a audio interface, only as a Cubase controller surface (the plan is to use a Prism Sound Orpheus for audio ins and outs).
Is it possible to run the M-Audio surface as a dedicated controller alongside another Firewire piece of hardware? Also, details of British shops with stock of new Mackie Control Universal Pro surfaces would be appreciated.

- - Active Near-field Studio Reference Monitors - -

Hi - I've been dying to complete my computer-music setup with a pair of semi decent monitors, or at least as good as I can get with an absolute maximum budget of £400 (to include either isolation pads, brackets or speaker stands).

Due to a distinct lack of space, the setup will be moving into the dining room up against the wall, to one side of the chimney stack. This means there will be walls directly in front, immediately to the left of me and a small section to my right where the fireplace juts out. Therefore, this makes back-ported speakers an issue unless they have decent room-control knobs to tweak.

At the moment, I am unsure whether any speakers will fit either side of the two screens, or if I might have to somehow fix speaker brackets into the dodgy old walls, or use speaker stands if it's possible to position them appropriately.

Any how, that aside, having done a little research I've limited my choice to the following, but I have no way of listening to or comparing them as there are no local warehouse/shops in the area. The list is as follows...

- KRK RP5 G2 or RP6 G2
- Fostex PM-05 MkII or PM-1 MkII
- JBL LSR 2325P
- Yahama HS50M
- Yamaha MSP5 Studio?

If anyone either owns any of the above, or has a good idea about any of them, which would you recommend for me and why? Lastly, would I be better off with 5" or 6" LF cones?

A few years ago someone recommended Event TR5/TR6 but you can't get them any more. Also, I've tried phoning shops but then they just suggest several to me to consider, which doesn't really help when I'm trying to plump for just one of them!

Thanks in advance for any advice :-)

Chris

Just how good is your time stretch ? Lets find out !

Right then. After reading the Freemasons interview on the blog, it got me thinking about time-stretching. I'm currently working on a track with a heavily time stretched sample (89 to 128 BPM) and it had me curious about which time-stretch I have access to will give me the best results.

So I've started a little test. So far it's between Logic9 Vs Record vs Live8. But I'd like to expand...so anyone using Cubase, Protools, Sonar, Traktion, Digital Performer, Reaper etc... please get in touch if you want to join in. I will send you the file, you stretch it and then I test it the same way I have tested the 3 so far. We'll post up things like an FFT of a null test and screenshots of files stretched to the same tempo to see which ones show more pre-ringing and other nasties. Maybe even audio examples, providing we can somehow not get in trouble. I think that copyright allows use of protected material for comparison and education, so we should be ok as long as we only use short-ish samples, credit the artist and put a link to buy the track etc.

So far, Logic has lost out in a bad, bad way. Details of my findings so far will be posted later when I have time.

Something else I've found out. Rewire is not concrete sample accurate! Whilst conducting a null test between Logic9 and Record, I found that if playback started from any other position then 1.1.1.1....I would get a high passed version of the signal bleeding from the main output. For anyone into DSP, you will know that a sample delay can act as an EQ.. So for people working with Rewire, be careful because this will clearly effect some of your mix decisions. Check and check your mixes again !

Hi All

I am looking for a reverb and of course Lexicon is first to mind.

The MX300 seems to be a middle sort of choice, and I wondered if anyone has one and could comment on the quality.

Are the Reverbs better on the various models?
Or do the tweaking facilities just get better?

It would be mainly used to enhance the echo on my guitar, but I would probably find other uses for it.

Many thanks

Alan
