Hi there, bit of an old thread I know but what did you get in the end?

The type of amp you want largely depends on what style you want to play and although I hate to say it....A solid state modelling amp is probably the best thing to start with unless you have a specific tone in mind.

This:

Roland Cube 30X at DV247.COM

Has some nice clean sounds, some bluesy sounds, some decent rock sounds and some metal sounds.

It's a great way to start, try a few styles see what fits, there's a lot of snobbery about valve amps and although I personally prefer them I wouldn't recommend something that is as limited as the Valve Jr, it's ace and I love mine but it's clean blues, dirty blues or bluesy rock

Default Blues Junior

Get a Fender blues junior. I am sceptical of anything that sounds great "for the money". The Blues Junior sounds great. It also has a master volume so you can drive it and keep it quiet as well. If you get to crank it up, it will really start to sing. The "snobbery" about valve amps is because they sound better. Pretty much always. I have never heard a really good sounding solid state amp, although I have occasionally heard some not too great sounding valve amps.

You'll be hard pushed to find a Blues Junior for £150 though.

My point about solid state modelling amps is that if the OP wants to play a wider variety of styles from Death metal to Jazz a cheap modelling amp will cover the lot in an acceptable way.
The Op isn't going to get a decent metal sound from a Blues Junior without spending even more on pedals, The Cube 30x covers all bases very well for a beginner and has a direct line out, onboard tuner and some nice sounding effects to mess around with, it's a great starting point until he decides on a style or tone he's after
