wait a minute... ive just made out the picture!

i think you have the microphone the wrong way round, you're using the dull side. i might be wrong as i don't use this particular microphone but i think you'll have better results turning it around.

Heheh. That's why I asked where the drum was as I didnt think it could be on the right given where the mic seemd to be pointing...

OK I've tried putting my other M3 near the beaters and I think it's improved the sound. I've also turned around the D112 and have put a thicker duvet against the radiator. Here's the result -
