Question FR: Pioneer CDJ 1000 mk IV

So what would you guys want to see from/if the CDJ 1000 is updated to mk IV,
i myself would like to see USB/MIDI support and more sturdy play and cue buttons.

Ive never had a problem with the play/cue button on these - if anything I rate them as among the most precise buttons on anything. What I do however find a little hard to be precise with are the loop buttons - that really could do with a tempo assist.

What would I change?

Higher quality 'tempo-lock' mode (ie pitch shifter - and same for the DJM-800).

mp3 play off a usb stick as well as CD.

PC/Mac editor for managing cue points on the SD card between multiple SD cards (ie CD decks) and even for import/export and sharing with software DJ apps (Traktor cues, Lives ASD files etc).

MIDI out so the DJM-800 + CDJ-1000 can be used together as a software controller as well.

An indication of what pitch change you are applying when turning the rim, rather than just allwasy indicating the pitch from the pitch slider.

A much tighter pitch slider - more like those on my Technics SL1200 decks (or at least the M5Gs that I have are quite tight).

Remember what pitch range and tempo mode you are using when you switch it off.

Subframe accurate cue points - i dont find 1/75 sec or whatever it is accurate enough for an absolutely precise drop in without testing the cue point lots.

But in the end, I basically quite like it - especially the fact that you can also accurately scratch cue/launch with it just like vinyl.

Must admit Im allways quite gentle with the buttons on the CDJs and tend to use the fader start mode of the DJM-800 quite alot too as I can drop in more accurately with it and get around the frame time quantize issue.

That would bump the price of these up a lot, due to the extra processing and memory space needed to do it

Pretty sure this is coming, since the CDJ200 can do it, as well as their old CMD 55 dual deck.

This is a tricky one. Since the CDJ reads and remembers the saved information for each cd, having an editor would probably do more harm then good. The data sharing between apps won't happen either, as they are competing, and again it's technically difficult

That's why they invented timecode discs. Implementing a true midi send from a deck is a bit pointless. What if you're playing a cd with no transient information. At least with timecode, you are still in control.

My Stanton deck does this, and it makes no difference imo. Unless you are trying to work out the pitch change you need to keep things constant.

Yh, I can see your point.

Bit pointless Pioneer spending the extra money. It takes how many seconds to set these up on a CDJ?

Someone told me this was more to do with the spec of CD's, rather then a problem with CDJs. Back in the 80's they didn't know what was coming, so they didn't plan for it.

The only other deck I've liked using is the Numark one, with the vinyl on top. But they are huge and not as easy to use.

You think you can sort me out with a sponsorshi/ambassador deal whilst you're there.

Joking aside, I'd love for him to come and join in. It'd be interesting to pick his brains on how he sees Pioneer's DJ products fairing in the long term against software rivals. Slowly, devices like the MPD40 and and EKS turntable are giving dj's the tactile/hands on control that they've missed from vinyl or CDJ.

Specifically, why Pioneer seem to have stopped working on their DJS software. Which had potential imo, but they've now fallen so far behind on the software front it's unreal. They implemented the CMD 55 as a hardware controller for it, which when I tried both together I was impressed. However, it's been years since they've done anything with it.

Pioneer are supposedly focusing on their DVJ range as it's there star pupil but pioneer keep things so close to their chest you very rarely hear of a leak till it's out

Even their DVJ products aren't safe. Possibly, the safest market they have are their mixers, which work with software via MIDI. even then, they have some stiff competition from A&H, or even people using separate audio & midi devices.
