There is not much of a formula when making rap instrumentals as rappers tend to be versatile in choosing instrumentals. There is however what might be called as "fabs" (or fads, sorry i do not know how to write the word ) as producers tend to explore what works during a certain time period.
In the end of the day what makes a rap song is the rapper (with few exeptions on the drum and bass mc's). Well at least that's my "theory" (again i haven't found a right word sorry ) based on years of extensive research

So are you saying there is more variation in hip hop compared to techno or house?

I don't like techno or house , actually i hate both and i haven't listened to as many techno songs as hiphop songs but all that i listened have the same four to the floor pattern on drums

It really does depend on what hip hop genre you listen to. Lately the mainstream hip hop has a habit of them all talking about the same rubbish, and having fairly similar beats and song structures. This is why I find myself increasingly drawn to alternative hip hop such as Lupe Fiasco, Dälek, Outkast, etc, as they vary things up a bit in the genre.

Seriously, go listen to Dälek.

yes Lupe's track did appeal to me and outkast are great, i personally think there album A.T.liens is awesome with some classic tracks, imo they where the guys to introduce the dirty south style into rap bringing artist's such as goodie mob out and from that cee-lo the artist today known as Gnarlz Barkley
