also anyone who bought cubase 5 or studio 5 between December 1, 2010 and February 28, 2011 you will be eligable for a heavily discounted upgrade to cubase 6 more info here..so it may be cheaper to buy a cubase product now whilst its still in the grace period then update mega cheaply (thats how i got cubase 5 i bought cubase 4 whilst in the grace period and updated for 20 euros )

On first impressions going from 5 to 6 does not seem to be as much of an upgrade as going from 4 to 5 was. I may be missing something but apart from whatever they have done to the GUI and a loopmash overhaul it does not seem to be packing as much heat as previous updates. There was nothing in the SB blurb that made me wanna shell out straight away other than to sooth my GAS.
I wait to be proved wrong but initial impressions are, for me, to skip 6 and just wait for 7, especially as it's usually the same price to upgrade from a few versions back as it is from just the one.

If you can't wait for the magazine there's a pile of videos here!

From what I've seen so far, I think the updates in C6 seem to be aimed more at professional users. Features like group track editing wiil be an absolute god-send for editing multiple tracks of close-miked drum kits or a guitar recorded with 2 mics plus a DI feed and the improved hit-point detection working across multiple drum tracks makes it possible to manipulate timing and edits consistently. The new track-comping feature will be equally time-saving for picking out the best parts of multiple vocal takes and is something I'm very much looking foward to getting my hands on! The new "Note Expression" capabilities will be of huge importance to anyone writing orchestral work. There seems to be a lot of improvements made to workflow which will be of varying importance to home and semi-pro users. The new guitar amp effect suite looks pretty good though... assuming you don't already have something else for that. It's definitily the update pros want, but it won't appear to have the whizz-bang impact the last major update did.

It does sort of look like they took one of the coolest features in Logic (the comping) and one of the coolest features in Pro Tools (Beat Detective) and rolled their own versions.

As you say Dave, it's not quite as earth-shaking as 4 to 5 but those two features alone will be worth the upgrade price for any power-user.

In a year and a half or so I'll get them in Nuendo if I'm lucky! :D

whitecat 14th January 2011 05:13 PM

Interestingly (maybe?) - Fredo is hinting... absolutely unconfirmed-ly hinting over on the Steinberg forum that Nuendo may get some or all of the C6 features as a dot update for version 5... so that would be super cool!

It doesn't make a lot of sense that all this version leapfrogging happens... the one upside for Nuendo users is that we get something in the way of "tested stability" by the time a new version comes out because a lot of the under-the-hood stuff is simply revised Cubase features.

I did see some mention of things changing regarding mapping external MIDI controllers direct to plugins... I'm hoping it's the feature I asked them for so I can finally make full use of my home-brew MIDI controller! I've not been able to find enough detail on it yet, hopefully theyu'll put the new manuals online soon so we can get at all the nitty-gritty detail.

after reading the list of new features as said before its not really a massive update as going to cubase 5 was none of the new features are off any intrest or use too me as i dont record live sessions but i can se this being really good for pro studios were they do a lot of band recording or movie work.

also the halionsonic se is a bit of a cop out all theyve done is take the sounds from halionone and give it the gui from halion sonic and add a few woodwind sounds :(

i think they should have added some new plugins and i was expecting some kind of sampler at least since theres not been a update to halion for years ..unless steinberg are going to announce some new plug ins at namm.

ill stick with cubase 5 and buy the halion sonic vst in a few months time im really happy with cubase 5 its very stable now which is wasnt when i first bought it but the updates have really stabalised its problems.but who knows steinberg could update it further with future updates and ill just buy the cubase 6 update its only 120 which is not a bad price :)

anyone any idea if you will be able to Freeze multiple tracks at the same time with the new Group Edit feature?

for some of us who dont have silly amounts of CPU power or often work with very large projects the freeze function is a god send, having to do it one track at a time however can be very time consuming!! :(

waxxy 15th January 2011 09:08 PM

just checked the dv247 website halionsonic upgrades now come down in price so i think ill get that instead of cubase 6 ..the only thing that intrests me is halionsonic se ..the other plug in loopmash is one plug in thats got a great idea but poor execution and i cant believe steinberg have just updated this plug in for cubase 6 when everyone i know hates this plug in even the forums at steinberg loads complain about how useless it is.

one quick question though to anyone whos upgraded id just like to double check you still get too keep hypersonic 2 once you upgrade?i dont want to lose hypersonic 2 thats one of my favourite plug ins :)

Piano 17th January 2011 07:47 AM

I currently have Cubase Studio 5, would i be right in thinking if i want to upgrade this http://www.dv247.com/computer-music-...grade-2--82346 is the correct one to buy?

Just double checking because there is so many and it would be typical of me to buy the wrong one!

When are they due in stock by the way?

Dave Boulden 17th January 2011 09:22 AM

Yep, that's the right one... that's good value to take you up a level to the full version of Cubase.
