The only time i get the firewire icon in the taskbar is when i reinstall the firewire driver. If i switch off the pc and log back on, it is away again. The only way to get it back is to uninstall then reinstall the driver. Weird.

Why is it when i log into steinbergs website and go to product activation, it only has cubase AI5 and LE5 etc in the list but not studio 5?

Start Menu > Control Panel > Device Manager, then look in the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" section. If there is an entry listed there, your Firewire port is active. If it is, what does the entry say on your PC?

It says "texas instrument 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller"

Good, that's your firewire port, it's working and it uses the Texas Instruments chipset. That's one checklist item you can tick.

When you plug in your mixer with the firewwire cable... does the PC make a noise (you'll probably only hear this if you have computer style speakers connected to the onboard soundcard) or does it show a little notification message in the bottom right hand of the screen?

When i plug the mixer in, nothing happens. No noise and nothing happens on the screen or in the toolbar. The only time i get anything in the toolbar is when i reinstall the n12 FW driver and a little grey icon appears in the toolbar with a green tick on it and when i hover over it it says, Yamaha Steinberg FW BUS. But if i was to shut the pc down right now and start back up again, that icon would be gone and the only way to get it back is to uninstall then reinstall the n12FW Driver. But to answer the main question, when i plug the mixer in, the computer doesn't seem to detect a thing it says in the manual i should run the unstallation CD which all goes fine, then restart the PC and then connect the N12 to the firewire port and the "found new hardware wizard" should appear and then i finish installation from there but the PC doesn't detect anything atall. Do you think it might be the FW cable?

The firewire ports seems to be working OK, but is not seeing anything when you plug the n12 in. A dodgy firewire cable certainly seems the most likely candidate at the moment.

That's what i'm starting to think as usually when you plus something in via usb or firewire, the computer will usually do something which lets you know it has detected that a device is connected but i get absolutely nothing.

Well i'm still no further forward with this. Tried re-installing quite a number of times since Friday but to no avail. Pretty frustrating to be honest, saved up for this new gear and i can't even use it. Why can't it just be as easy as installing a printer? run disc, plug it in, hey presto! If it turns out to be the FW cable that's faulty then i've wasted a helluva lot of time arsing about with this! Oh and there is still the registering Cubase problem to takle. This has NOT been my weekend.......

Here's hoping mate. Just been messing around with the n12, trying my Guitar and bass and drums through it in the meantime. The Preamps definitely are as good as i was told they were, and it's nice to have far better level metres than the ones i've been used to in the past. There's also alot of cool monitoring/control room features and the onboard compressor and reverb are better than i anticipated. It's a big step up for my level, just a pity i can't get the most use out of it as yet but i've been very impressed with the sound i get playing through it so i'm happy in that respect. Loads of time spent on all this techy stuff and very little spent on Music though.

That's me got everything working now thankfully! I downloaded the latest updates from the Yamaha Website like the synegry guy told me to, including the firmware update which i hadn't done before. Cubase still asks me to run the LCC when i open it though, should i worry about this? I have tried re-inserting the activation code again but it just says i have already used it and cannot use it again.

Also thanks for the help guys.

Open up the "eLicenser Control Center" (Start Menu > All Programs > eLicenser > eLicenser Control Center) and check if your Steinberg license is listed in the Licenses panel.

If it's not, try the "Recover" button and see if that resoves the activation problem (your PC will need to be online for this... follow the onscreen instructions).
