I've been reading up a lot on EQ lately and i've noticed on more than one occasion that the built in EQ in Cubase (Studio 4 in my case) isn't up to much and can sound harsh. Thing is i've also read that EQ is EQ and the difference is virtually zero in software between one and the other. I will of course experiment, I have IIEQ pro but always tend to use the Cubase EQ as it's just there.
Any other Cubase users have a similar experience? Thanks. edit - I meant to mention i've read that Cubase EQ isn't rated that much either. I'd really like to be a bad workman that blames his tools, and this time be right ![]() |

I actually think the EQ in C4 (and also in C5) is a huge improvement on previous versions, so it may be that a lot of "prejudice" against Cubase's channel EQs is down to bad experiences with previous versions. If you are finding it not very inspiring, try playing with the "EQ Type" drop-down selections on each of the 4 EQ bands.
Having said that, I do tend to nearly always use UAD's Cambridge EQ as I find it a bit more controllable (i.e. it seems to do what *I* want it to do), sometimes I'll use the Sonnox EQ, but for simple HPFs to cut the low-end (e.g. to remove mic rumble etc...) I'll nearly always use the Cubase channel EQ. ![]() ______________________________

Well I played with two completely different sounds last night, one was a drum loop and the other a vocal snippet from something i'm working on. I used Cubase EQ and the IIEQ and the difference was subtle but definately there, especially around the mids. I boosted a few db using both EQs around dead centre and in both cases the sound was fuller using IIEQ, and definately a bit harsh using Cubase EQ. More noticable was applying a HPF and sweeping across frequencies. using the Cubase EQ it was like dragging the sound across sand and IIEQ was perfectly smooth, make sense?
I'll have to download some demos of commercial EQs and see what difference there is there too. |
