i know on my computer if i have microsoft wavetable set as my primary audio driver i cant get any midi notes recognized in cubase ..i know this because its happened to me a few times ive had no midi signals showing and ive checked my connections and there it is smiling at me so i change to emu or mackie drivers and bang its working again ..i dont know why but thats always been a big problem on my computer ever since i bought it last year.and another thing ive done is switch automatic windows updates off because everytime it would update it self everytime id turn on cubase id find all my preferences had been changed to default settings so id have to spend ages getting everyting just like i want them too .weird

It's really not weird at all, the Wavetable synth is just like any standalone emulated synth... it instantiates MIDI a MIDI input and a MIDI output within Windows. The Wavetable synth is not available as an audio driver.

I think you are confusing the names, it is most likely something like "Microsoft Wave" driver rather than "Microsoft Wavetable" driver you are setting as your primary audio driver.

It should also be noted that enabling such devices as the Wavetable synth may take your system beyond the 10 MIDI device limitation of previous Windows OS's (up to and including WinXP) and thus make your desired MIDI port invisiable to DAWs running on your machine. This problem is exacerbated with the installation of virtual MIDI ports.

I swear I should hire myself out to studios with unreliable programs, once again it fixed itself. Happy, but slightly annoyed at the same time as it caused a bit of heartache.
I wrote down all the good advice from you guys, came home, fired up Cubase and BEHOLD! winking red bar straight from the get-go. I must have closed and opened Cubase 5 times last night, changed stuff, restarted; all the usual drill and nothing. Come home today and WHAM! working midi. Yet another wasted thread. I think I need a more reliable computer. At least its here for reference I guess, thanks again but damn, my laptop is hormonal.

I was half expecting that, I'm still flirting with the idea of Maccing it up, Logic looks like it would suit my workflow just as well if not better than Cubase (and Cubase is cross platform anyway and a dedicated machine would be sweet) and would probably inspire me a little more but can't even afford to seriously consider it yet

I am NO pc guru but I think, and I quote it from the screen,

"Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" is a completely separate animal to windows bleeps and bloops. I have the latter turned off in the BIOS on both my computers but WTS still runs fine.

Not that I use it much! Sounds are not good and latency can be bad but, I always get folks to set it up first when troubleshooting MIDI because it always works!

Dave.
